looking for a used Z?
My first car, when I was sixteen, was my S13. Played with it for a bit then got my current S14. Looking for a Z but I wouldn't have ever considered one at that age because of 1., the insurance, 2., if I screw up I would be on my own w/ that and 3., c'mon. It's just not practical.
Get something fun and practical until you can buy something of that nature. I'm sure by the time that happens your 350z love affair will have died out due to the up and coming cars that would be more appealing to you.

Normally i would flame you to hell and back but coming from another fairly young Z owner, please do not get a Z for you first car. Try something like a C230 Mercedes or something of that nature. Make sure your hp number is close to 200. If i would have gotten a Z for my first car, I would have killed myself. NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
I know it seems like a long way off but wait until you have the basics down before you get a car that can "perform" aka spin out easily, as the Z.
I had a 2002 C320 and loved that car to death. It had a lot of problems but I "learned" to drive in that car. RWD and could throw the tail out but not to fast where loosing control would be an issue. I slid that car around and got a feel for driving in it.
The first time i drove my Z in the dry... nearly crashed (VDC FTW). Second time in wet... nearly crashed. Seriously, its a completely different beast then anything you could possibly handle.
A friend of mines cousin got a Daytona Blue Z for his first car and decided it would take it up to 100 with 3 people in the car. Long story short, 1 of those three people are still living.
Moral of the story and LONG *** post, please dont get a Z for you first car. Instead ask what would be a good first car with plans of getting a Z in the future. Your parents are willing to spend 13K for your first car, you lucky so find a nice well suited car and go with it.

Step 2) Work 32-40 hours a week
Step 3) Work a lot for a steady year
Step 4) Take your earnings, and get a loan
Step 5) Find out insurance is too expensive for you
Step 6) Slit wrists
Moral of the story is... Should've bought an RSX

. And actually... an RSX wouldn't be too bad of an idea.
damn I feel old calling you a kid, but ya gotta love it when a younger kid thinks hes an expierienced driver when he only has a permit.
yay, daddys going to buy me a 300hp RWD sportscar for my first car, right in time for winter.
you will not have the respect or care for the car that it deserves, your insurance is going to be rediculousssss, and after your first major accident (which is going to happen - your BS about just racing up until the speed limit is laughable), it's going to be even worse, you'll probably end up needing to get rid of the car after that unless you are truely spoiled rotten.

Just figure out a way to make your own money and buy a used Z once you've saved up enough. Before you have driven much or even know how to drive, any POS car is going to feel fast. As has already been said there is no point getting something really powerful until you know how to actually handle it properly. A 350z isn't exactly the best car to first learn how to drive in.
^ dang... harsh... but the truth. A lot of kid crash performance or fixed up cars in my neck of the woods. You hear about so and so being injured or dead from a such and such a crash. Usually from street racing because they think they know how to drive. I've been driving manual cars since I was 16 and my first car was a Sentra hatchback!!! yes Hatchback!!! The Z is not an easy car to drive, I had to get use to it for a while when I bought mine.
For under $20,000 there's going to be quite a bit of miles on that car. Everything cost money, especially repairs when you do something bad or wrong. I don't think this is abest choice for a first car. Plus, when you get a little older and save up more money, the 370Z or maybe even something better in the Z family will be a better choice.
Just my $0.02
