History Channel Z special
Did anyone happen to catch the History Channels special on the history of the Z? I saw the last 8 min of it. It was filmed in the mid 90's.
Not sure if it will reair. : /

And then another guy stated something about "next year in '96...." That is when I figured it must have been taped sometime in '95.I wish I could have seen more than I did. Looked like a pretty informative program.
At first, I was like huh, 7 or 8 EDT on Sunday (thinking PM)? I dug around on History Channel's site and on Yahoo TV and couldn't find anything.
Then I found out my Tivo had recorded it for me as a suggestion! It's probably cuz I had 3 thumbs up on thumbs on that series from some prior ep. It was on at 8 am PST on Saturday. It was the show Automobiles. It doesn't look like it'll air in the next 2 weeks. See http://www.historychannel.com/global...Code=THC&View= .
The Tivolution rocks!
Anyhow, the show was pretty decent. The TV ad of the 280ZX was hilarious (cuz of the features they bragged about). The copyright data the end said 1996, but yeah, they did refer the next model year being 96 and Bob Sharp in it was driving a 95 300ZX TT.

I'm far from knowing about the legal issues, but if true, it's quite lame.
You could be right, but the show was on basic cable, not a pay channel. I didn't purchase it, therefore they're not missing out on royalties if I include the commercials. I could understand if it was a pay per view event, or something a video available through subscription or purchase only, and I distributed it.
Ok, i'll get silly...
So maybe i'll just place my "videotaped" mpeg copy on a server, that my friends have access to go and view from. Effectively that's like me leaving a VHS copy in a beach house or cabin that I own in another state that my friends visit often and watch my videotapes. They don't even have to download it to view it.
I have a feeling this is going to start a debate/discussion .. but that's great. It'll be informative ;-)

I think if you tape something directly off of broadcast TV unedited (leaving all the commercials in), and make it available for free. You are not breaking any copyrights. You are just 'extending the antenna'.
Now if it was cable/satellite (something you pay a monthly fee for) I would think there is more of a legal precedence to sue. However, I don't think anyone would throw a fit if you TiVoed something on cable, left the commercials in, and put it up for download and posted the link. It will probably be 'edited' and up on Kazaa the same night anyway...if it is not already on there.
Any lawyers want to advise?

I think the History channel sells tapes of all of the episodes of the "Automobiles" series on thier web site if you want to go that route. It would be nice if updated the Z episode to include the 350.
IANAL, but I'm a writer and publisher and frequently deal with copyright and intellectual property issues.
zxsaint and overlord tom: You're both assuming that because you wouldn't make any money off your proposed copying that it's not a violation of copyright. This is incorrect. Also, tom, the program was on the History Channel, which is a cable service, not "free" broadcast TV. But that has absolutely nothing to do with its copyright protection.
There are cases in which one is permitted to make a copy under the "fair use" doctrine, and taping a program off the air for personal use is generally accepted as one. Lending the actual tape to a friend, as I recommended, is not producing additional copies, and therefore is in keeping with the fair use principle.
But converting it to MPEG would probably raise red flags with most IP lawyers and the program's copyright holders, because once it's in a digital file it's much, much easier to copy. And hosting this file on a Web server is essentially the same as giving it away to the world, and has no fair use justification that I can see. And since you are giving away for free something that the owner is trying to sell, you are (potentially) inflicting economic harm that could serve as the basis for a lawsuit.
Now if you do this anyway, and only tell a couple of friends privately where to find it, are you going to get sued? Chances are no, because the copyright holder isn't very likely to find out about it. But that's probably what the 1,200 people who recently got sued by the RIAA thought, too. And you were about to post all the details here on a public Web site. Not very discreet, safe, or wise.
So like I said, pass a single physical copy of the off-air tape among friends. Or buy a copy, like TCL suggests. Legal and safe. Anything else, and don't come crying to me when the History Channel lawyers are crawling up your butt.
BTW, I saw the show several months ago. It was pretty good. And no, you can't borrow my tape.

I know of IRC channels that record and distrubute TV shows every week. They're been running for about 5+ years now and they have never been shut down. well actually come to think of it, some have shut down.. but still this such a small audience that they'll never know.. so everyone shhhhhhh
heheh.. i dunno... previous post had some good points tho
