advice for someone who knows nothing about cars
my boyfriend is currently overseas with the military and he left his z parked in the garage of friends who like to party, particularly in the garage. hes been freaking out about someone putting a beer can or something on the hood leaving rust rings and that kind of thing. i want to buy a car cover as a gift but i'm not sure if theres any reason someone would object to using a car cover. i want it to be a surprise but i need some educated advice on the matter because i dont want to buy something if car covers are the root of all evil or something silly like that!
Buy it. You may be able to find a used one (I just did two weeks ago) on this forum. Otherwise you can buy a new one from one of the many site sponsors.
Although the cans on the car (assuming not spilled) won't hurt anything, everyday bumping and brushing against the car can and will. I cover our car in the garage for this very reason. It's a good idea, especially if there is a lot of foot traffic through there. I don't know why his friends are hanging out in your/his garage when he is not around, but so be it. You're a good girlfriend (I'm being serious/I'm not interweb hitting on you/I'm married and she has a Z also). Be ready for the leg humpers tomorrow morning asking for pictures.

As stated above. Disconnect the battery. Buy the car cover. You can pick up one online or just go to the Nissan dealership. I bought mine at the dealership. It's a perfect fit and protects the car from all kinds of things...
+1 OEM car cover, i use it all the time and it feels like it's good quality.
Just make sure the car's clean and dry before you put the cover on it for long-term storage. You don't want it to be covered in mold when he gets back. Pretty cool of you to do this, by the way
thanks everyone! unfortunately we only have a one car garage that our roommate claimed for deployment, thats why he has in in his friends', so i'll be going over there every other week to turn it on, probably wont take it any farther than the driveway though, i'm not sure i trust myself to drive it, i have an automatic trans. toyota. i will make sure to wash and thoroughly dry it first though. thanks again!
wow, what a nice girlfriend you are to make a screen name for it on forums just to look out for your boyfriend. of course unless YOU are the actual dude who just disguise as a girl bc you don't wanna feel stupid... haha syke
haha, thanks i actually felt a little creepy/obsessive signing up just to make sure it would be ok, but i can guarantee i am 100% clueless-knows-nothing-about-cars-girl whereas he is a mechanic. but i figure i can poke around on here to learn a little bit so i can actually understand what the hell hes saying when he tells me about his new sway bars and struts

A battery quick disconnect might be worth looking into. I have one on my old ZX that sits for long periods of time. Takes all of 5 seconds to disconnect or reconnect and you don't have to worry about a dead battery as much. It's should be less than $10 at any auto parts store.
