M3 or 350z
#21
I also own a 2008 335I E90 (4 door) and yes my Bimmer is faster then my NISMO, however I took it in for services and found out the warranty expired and it was over $400. Like I said, the upkeep is nuts. If you want a BIMMER, go for a low mileage 335I. They are about even with the E46 M3 out of the box and they are a lot cheaper to mod. With just a tune, a 335I will smoke the M3!
but it costs about 2 times more than the M3 here in Denmark so I can't afford it

watch out for the upkeep cost on the M3.... yes its a bit faster out the box but in reality its a mid 13 sec car... low 13's is not the norm for the M3..... and no one disputes this fact.. not even M owners..
then again if its just a trade, and his is in good condition go for it... just keep some money for upkeep costs and pray nothing goes wrong with the M.... I would do it if its a straight up trade...

think of this....
BMW Engine: 3000-4500
Z Engine: 999-2200
part replacements on M are horrid
part replacements on Z are CHEAP!!!
Lets not even touch the MODS yet... lol M is a nice car but not worth it just a status marker

I know you buy a BMW for how it drives, but on looks alone... strip the badges and tell me which car looks better... The BMW has been using the same styling for how many years now? only with minor tweeks. The Z has much better lines.
If you want to play in the arena with the big dogs and do it right its going to cost you.
If you cant afford a used 335 you problably cant afford the upkeep on the M3.

I had an E46 M3 (05) for 3+ years before getting my 06 350Z.... the M3 is a totally different car and you can't really compare the two...
M3 faster, handles better, and fits 5... the Z is more mod friendly... I've got more looks with my stock Z than my modded M.. go figure...
I can understand getting bored and wanting a new project though... go w/ 2002+ because 01's had rod bearing engine problems... 03.5+ will get you LEDS
some old pics of my M

I used to have 01 M3, had 41,000 miles on it. However, I had rod bearing engine problems which would cost me around $3k.... so once I figured out, I sold it... and got new 06 Z.
at the first moment, the Z felt really slow... but after owning 3 years, i've got used to it.
go look into lower mileage 05+ or even 335.

Your Z is gorgeous, you'd be insane to trade that for an M3. My 01 was a great car, and stock for stock it out-everythings the Z. But my Z is only lightly modded in the speed department and I think it would have kept up if not beaten my M. And my Z has coilovers and other suspension goodies, and I KNOW it handles better than the M did. I honestly do like the Z better for a lot of reasons.
I understand the appeal of BMW's though. They have their own "feel", as in hard motor mounts so you can feel that engine through your bones, and a low steering ratio so it feels like it handles better than it does, even the normal 3-series has that. My honest opinion is that an E46 M3 is not an upgrade if you have a modded Z. I do think that the 135's, 335's are worth it though, they are leaps ahead of the E46 M's...plus you get free maintainence, can't beat that!

If you can afford a BMW that is out of warranty do it.If not you will be in for a big surprise when you take it to a shop. The parts for that car are almost as expensive as a mercedes.

I used to have a Phoenix Yellow M3, then a silver S4 and I currently own an 07 ZR.
If you want a head turner from the general public then the Z will do it for you, but car enthusiasts will appreciate the M3 more. I get more looks in the ZR then I ever did in the M3 but people who love cars loved the M3.
If you think you are bored of the Z, then you will be bored of the M3 even sooner. I found the M3 too luxurious, if possible, too refined to be a true sports car, but a demon when you push it. That is probably why it is such a great car, to quote Luda, it’s a “lady in the street but a freak in the bed”. Truthfully the general public wouldn’t even blink an eye at the M3 until they have a ride in one.
The M3 will definitely cost more to maintain and run. But the M3 is still a head turner in my eyes, I still find myself gawking at them when I see one on the streets.
If I had my choice I would have kept the S4 and the ZR, but the S4 was killing me in gas mileage so I gave into a TSX as my DD instead.
