Need help on how to handle this...
I ordered my 04 touring model in late July...got a vin # last week from dealer, who tells me delivery on Nov 15. When I researched the vin# I found out that the car didn't have side air bags which I ordered. I don't want to wait another 3-4 months. How much leeway do you think I have with negotiating with the dealer about taking a car that isn't the one I ordered. I'm looking for a reduction in the price of the option...and whatever else I can haggle for....what would you do?
If you can live without side air bags, then take the car. But def. have him give you something else in return. Aftermarket accessories at cost, ect. GL!
If you want the air bags, then you might have to wait longer until he finds you a different car.

Look around at other dealers in your area. See if they have what you want. If they do, walk in to your dealership asking for some kind of deal and tell them you're ready to walk and buy from another dealer and you'd like your deposit back for them wasting your time. It worked well for me when I got mine and they screwed up my order. You just have to honestly be ready to walk and buy at another dealer.
Here is my opinion. (this is only opinion)
You basically have 2 choices, take this car as is, or wait until you find the car you want.
If you take this car I think the MINIMUM they can do is adjust the price downward by the retail price of the side airbags. If they are cool, they should knock a few more bucks off for the hassle.
I wouldn't expect a huge discount, since they can just order you a correct car or try to search for one.
I guess I would do this.
1) Tell em it ain't what you ordered.
2) Ask them to try to locate a better match.
3) If they can't find a better match, start talking about the price of the car they did get for you.
If it was me, I would not wait 3-4 more months just for the side airbags. But that is sort of a personal choice.

Go to www.nissanusa.com and find the car you want by using the locator. Then call that dealership. Why order one and go through that hassel. When you order a car you are at the dealerships mercy, and that is not a good thing at all!
They can feed you any kind of story they want.
My advice is to locate one yourself and work free flatbed shipping to the deal.

thanks for all the opinions.....do you think that free oil changes for a few years is a reasonable request(along with the subtraction of the cost for the side airbags)?
thanks for all of your thoughts....

I would ask for 2 years of free oil changes, and also get every aftermarket item the dealer can get, and get it at dealer cost.
My dealer tried to say they could could get me the spoiler to me for cost and was only $7 cheaper than MSRP. Beware of that tactic also.
Front end bra, car cover, cargo net, ect.

I hate to be a nay sayer.......but why would they give you anything.........you ordered a car with side airbags.....the one they get didn't give you side airbags.....so they just won't charge you for the airbags........no big deal. They're not gonna change your oil for free............basically, if you don't take this car, someone else will.......they don't really care.......they are under no legal obligation to sell you this car, provided they haven't cashed your deposit check......also, on a good note, even with the VIN, it's possible that every option doesn't show up....this happend on my car........my VIN didn't list certain options that came on the car......the VIN also won't list any dealer installed options........is it possible the dealer will install the airbags upon it's delivery to them.............
Whatever they promiss you make sure it is on paper signed by the owner, otherwise you going to be like that guy couple of month back who was promissed free oil changes and something else for 3 years and never got anything.
