I found this out first hand in 2005. I had a 10 year old Minivan with only 50k miles on it. My wife was t-boned by a driver who ran a red light and totalled the van. The Van was in immaculate condition with very low miles. We got very little for it. I tried to argue with the insurance company that I wouldn't be able to replace it for what they gave me for it, but the arguments didn't do me a lot of good. Getting an attorney would cost me more than the difference in value so I ate it.

Don't think his parents had any children who lived....They will love this kid over in France, if he is really there. They think we are all dumba$$es anyway, and he will offer proof on a daily basis.
Oh, and thanks Dave!

You're pretty much f-ed into taking what they're offering on a totaled car payout unless you're in the mood for a huge drawn out fiasco and are willing to pay for a protracted legal dispute with them. The trick is just be lucky enough not to ever have to deal with the insurance co.

I had a much better experience with GEICO a few years ago. I T-boned some guy when he ran a red light and it totalled my 5 year old Lincoln LS with average miles. They gave me full NADA retail as well as bought me a new cell phone and portable XM radio because mine were damaged in the accident.

I loved its looks, handling and pick up but it had no interior storage room and got crappy gas mileage.

Ouch on the Lincoln. No idea on what to expect to get $ wise on the 350Z. My's a 2003 Track with 18,000 miles on it, but I know it would not get much either, so good luck on what ever you get.

I think the insurance companies are the real crooks in this, I can't believe they can just get away with giving him 10 or 11k for an 2005 350Z! They cost WAY more than that! Especially for an 2005. There needs to be some sort of oversight with the private insurance companies. They give only a fraction of what ALL the websites say somebody's car should be worth, and get away with it! Because hiring a lawyer is too expensive, and that's the only option.

I think all too often the private insurance companies are ripping people off when they need their insurance the most. I have a perfect driving record and pay ghastly rates every month, and then when I do have a crash and need them the most, it's a battle to see any money, and when they actually do cough it up, it's only a fraction of what you should be getting. And THEN they raise your rates so bad you end up paying for it yourself many times over. What a messed up system.

You are a young male in a sports car, you are probably the highest risk factor that exists.

And not to be a jerk, but if you have only been driving a few years, a perfect driving record really isn't very meaningful. You pay high rates until you have proven that you probably won't screw up. At this point they feel that you just haven't screwed up yet.
