Were these hand built or were they manufactured. If they were manufactured that would mean that the factory would be up and running or could nissan use other factory’s just to get out a zcar or two?

You're absolutely correct. My company make big computer, so I know about how manufacturing process work. All new product start with a limited/small batch production run to flush out equipment, procedure, worker training issue. You want to find out the problem and correct the process when you only make a few items, so there are less to fix.
