Looking into buy a used 350z...
Hi everyone,
I test drove a 350Z today and it seemed to be a little different from a G35 I test drove. The G35 seemed to be REALLY powerful and had deep "VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOM" sound in the cockpit.. and I absolutely loved it. But when I test drove the 350Z today, it didn't really have that characteristic, the engine sound was more dull, and seemed to have less horsepower.
What could be the difference? Maybe I wasn't hammering it enough?

the 350Z was definitely stock, but not sure about the G35 now... but it "seemed" like it was stock.
What mods would've been added to make the "nismo" engine noise more pronounced?

not going to read through all the comments but heres the deal
2003-mid 2005- CD001 trans has soft synchro issues.
mid 2005-2006 have the better trans(CD009)
2006- worst year to buy. they did a rev up motor that has sever oil consumption issues.
2007-2008- best years to own. comes with the HR motor with dual intake, and the CD009 trans that is the cure to the synchro issues.

350z weighs between 3188 lb- 3602 lb
g35- 3369 to 3505.
I remember my cousin's Nismo Altima had that sound characteristic inside the cockpit when he gunned it. Could it be just an aftermarket exhaust?
Sure, I had some problems that were all fixed under warranty (TSB on some of them) like a seeping valve cover seal, both power window motors and regulators failed, axle click TSB and the infamous front tire feathering issue (well, the front tires were replaced an alignment done), but I really haven't had any trouble after the warranty totally expired. I don't think I've had to get anything fixed in the last 1.5 to 2 years (or more).
Having an automatic transmission seems to help. (ducking for cover) It seems like the 03 MTs were notoriously bad. I was on this board back then and knew two coworkers w/03 Zs. My automatic transmission has given me 0 trouble.
OP: Are you in Vancouver, BC, WA or another state/province? I doing some feelers to possibly sell my Z, but if you're in Canada, that might complicate things (import issues).

I have a CD009 and haven't had the same grinding problems as before, however it isn't smooth like many transmissions I have driven. There is sometimes a rough feeling when it goes into gear (nearly any gear). From what I can tell, this is "normal" for a 350z as it isn't a grind. But I've driven transmissions that are like butter (Ferrari 360). The 350z MT is just cheap feeling.
hm, I tried searching google for my answer, but got confused.
I was told that all 2006 models have the rev-up engines, and you can also tell if the RPM gauge redlines at 7000. But I see some 2006 clusters with 6spd MT redline at 6600.
what's the deal?

Yes. The G35 has a vaaroom engine and is made for racing. On the other hand the 350Z has a remremrem engine more suitable for cruising the hood rimmed up with killers system.
