I'm sure this has been posted, but it's hard to search for. How can one find build date, etc., from the VIN?

Here's how to read your VIN number:

1st digit: country of manufacture (i.e., J = Japan, 1-4 = USA, etc.)
2nd digit: manufacturer (i.e., N = Nissan, H = Honda, etc.)
3rd digit: vehicle type or manufacturing division
Digits 4-8: identifies vehicle features/options
9th digit: check digit, helps detect altered/fake VIN numbers
10th digit: model year (J-Y = 1988-2000, 1-3 = 2001-2003)
11th digit: assembly plant
Digits 12-17: vehicle serial number (sequence of the vehicle as it rolled off the assembly line)

 

On the 350Z the 12th digit signifies side air bags or not. A 12th digit of 0 means the car has side air bags. The serial number is the last 5 digits.
