Quite Frankly - Open Diffs are Idiot Proof, If you start to slip just let go of the gas.

Upgrading to an OEM VLSD is pointless, when they are in perfect working order they have a 30% lock. Once you overheat it a couple times it becomes an open diff. A couple autocrosses or trackdays and it is toast. The only thing a working VLSD is good for is daily driving.

Replacing the steering wheel as someone mentioned, you can still keep your cruise control. There are threads about it, most mount the controls in the dash under the key. I have to set mine up before my next Cali trip.

^I have done about 3 track drift sessions with my VLSD and its still locking just fine?? Not to mention a decent amount "spirited" off track shenanigans

Of course its not the best thing in the world but it sure as hell beats my open dif by a LONG shot. I can only speak from experience in regards to that, so I guess I just have a bullet proof VLSD? Lol They aren’t made out of glass, im pretty sure they can take a bit of abuse before completely being rendered useless…

I drove a friend's Nismo 350Z at the track recently on race tires and found his VLSD to be pretty bad. Every corner exit was inside spin...then lock inside spin....then lock.

Before the run we were both talking about possible mods for his Z. After the run I told him his LSD was costing him more time than any other part on the car.

To be fair, I think his diff is shot. I have driven many Z's with stoc VLSD's that didn't have the problem.

^i have encountered this issue with a R160 VLSD in my boys 510. It was really inconsistent during lock up. Its almost as if it locked up when it wanted to, it was very similar to what your describing but maybe a bit worse. I know it was a really old dif though and had seen a tremendous amount of abuse.

You think it's good because you have never driven with a real diff. Spirited driving is nothing compared to being driven fast on the track. Full lock is 30%, pretty pathetic.

I have driven a 240 with a 2 way Kaaz, as well as some other 240s with clutch type difs, not to mention my 510 has a clutch type in it as well.

I am fully aware of the difference, however i still agree with you on the pathetic aspect of ANY VLSD to be quite honest. Im just saying that its not a useless thing to debate putting on your car. 30% is better than nothing IMHO.

The main luxury that may bother most on a base model is that there is no cruise control. So that is another thing you may want to think about
i endorse this message With good tires and Rain-X on the windshield, 75 mph in the rain is no problem for my base model

I have a base w/ the open diff, its completely managable as a DD once you get the feel for it and learn its limits.

My 05 base was open, converted to VLSD.

I have a 06 Base and I DD it in rain or snow. Good set of Blizzaks during the winter, never had any major problems (very mild winter this year mind you)

And I never have any problems in the rain. If you recognize the importance of slowing down and driving carefully in inclement weather then it shouldn't be a problem.

I would like to pick up an OEM VLSD to help out in the winter though. If you get a Base, I think it is definitely worth the money to pick one of those up.

I love my base which I specifically got to not have any of the electronic nannies and to be lighter.

I have quaife & 4.08, CC, homelink, steering wheel audio controls and a slew more and it is perfect.

Someone stated in this thread CC switches were possible on aftermarket steering wheels.

I have 5 maps. had 1 before I got the CC.
