Default Less cabin noise with sunroof?

Hey everyone,

Here is a strange question: I've had a g35 sedan 6mt and would like to move to the Z. The only thing that has held me back is the intense level of road/tire noise in the car and how cramped the cabin felt. I test drove the Z roadster the other day and loved it...somehow the interior sounded much quieter with the top up and with it down, I just got that sweet engine howl and wind noise that is fine. I'm wondering if the decreased noise level is because it had a soft top or if Nissan insulated the Zr better than the coupe?
The other option I'm thinking about is a coupe with a sunroof (I actually like hardtops with sunroofs better). If you have a coupe with the sunroof installed, can you tell me if having the roof open quiets the car down some and makes it feel less claustrophobic? I'm thinking the hardtop causes all the sound to reverberate and a hole up top can help with that.
Also, is there anyone in Colorado with a sunroofed coupe that I could take a look at?

Thanks,

All hatchbacks are noisier than cars with trunks. Don't think a sunroof is going to change that and besides, 350Z's with sunroofs look like azz. IMHO only of course.....

I'm with Perf, a sunroof looks stupid on a Z.

You are moving from a "luxury based" Infiniti to a more "sports based" Nissan. There is going to be more noise, a rougher suspension, and less room. If you can't handle it, stay in the G35. Don't try to turn the Z into something it's not.

There are only a couple of Z's with a sunroof installed. None came from the factory with a sunroof

And of the few that exist, many are ugly hack-jobs.

If a sunroof "worked" on a Z,Nissan would have offered it.
It does'nt...
As already mentioned, aftermarket sunroof installed on a Z look
terrible.You should consider a G35/37.Nissan has postioned the G
to be more of a luxury sports car.The Z is a sports GT car.
There are ways to sound deaden the Z.This topic has been discussed
many times. The problem with the Z coupe is the rear wheel wells are
actually inside the cabin.Much of the road noise and/or exhaust noise comes
from this area.Installing sound deadening material around the wheel wells and especially
in the truck greatly reduces the road noise.I've done my Z this way.The noise level
was greatly reduced.

the sound level increase in a coupe is from the rear tires being very lightly insulated and being behind your head.
In a roadster theres a TON of material between you and those rear tires.

Aside from that, tire choice itself is a large proponent in sound level.

Thanks for the info, and yes, I know the Z has a different intent vs the G. That's why I'm moving over to the Z (I found the longer wheel base on the G made it more more of a touring car and less nimble overall).

Also, I wasn't asking about the aesthetics of adding sunroof (I think it looks fine with a roof) or if I'm taking away from the clear intentions of the car to do it, I know that I am but want something light and chuckable and with the pleasure of some sun. I was asking about the functionality of the roof regarding sound.

What I'm hearing is that the sound issue comes more from not having a distinct trunk area the wheel wells are housed in. This would explain why the roadster sounds much more quiet. I'll do a search on sound proofing the wheel wells...thanks again.

This^^^^^^My Z has a lot of road noise inside. Get a vert if thats your thing I just really do not like the way a Z roadster looks unless the top is down. My G has a bit more road noise than most but the sunroof being open only masks the road noise. Really if you want a quiet ride the coupe Z is not for you. I don't mind as it is a sports car.

if you are thinking about adding a sunroof dont do it. It will never be right and will leak eventually not worth it. As far as noise goes man up its a sports car and sacrifices have to be made.

A hardtop 350 wasn't designed to have a sunroof. Thusly you may damage the structural integrity of the car, which may become imperative in the event of an accident.

Buy the Z and get "better" (i.e. quieter) tires. Loud tires are common, and you will hear the Zs suspension moreso than the G, as well as pebbles, etc.
