How will the Z compare to the RX-8? -
Yes, yes... I know the RX-8 is still far from production. Does anybody know what sort of performance is expected? With such a high redline, I'd expect it to behave much like an S2000; not quite as much around-the-town grunt as the Z. Any thoughts?

As a 1993 RX-7 R1 owner, I hope I can speak with some validity.
1st Although it has been reported differently on the RX-8 forum, I think that body stiffness is going to be somewhat of an issue. The car has no B pillar.
2nd Yes, you will have to rev very high to get peak HP. Daily driving will be more of a challange.
3rd Torque will be very weak compared to the Z. That is inherent in the rotory engine (unless you have a 20b engine).
I considered waiting for the RX-8. For my money, the Z is a much better all around car. Supposedly, there will be an RX-7 coming out in 2005. That may be a different story. Some are saying that it will be a TT.
Just my 2 cents,
Eric

the RX-8 has almost identical power curve and output as the s2000, but as a 2+2 I think it will be a bit heavier and the lack of a B pillar will question the regidity. Then again, the s2000 has no roof and it's pretty damn stiff
I have gotten a pre release package from Mazda, sign up on their website, and it has inital numbers/figures. Weight is going to be more then Base Z with only 250 Horse power @ 8500 RPM. It's supposed to compete with 330I, C230 etc, a sport coupe type car. Def. NOT going to compare to S2000 or 350Z in speed or handeling, looks like a fun car, and I would def. get it over the overrated and overpriced 330 or C230, but not as a 350Z competitor. BUT we will have to wait and see when it comes out.

LA-Z,
I'm curious how current the latest info is on the RX8. I remember they were talking about close to 2700 lbs this time last year. That was hard to believe so I can see how that was a pipe dream. Also, I heard recently that they've extracted more HP from the engine but this was from a Mazda salesman so it's a bit skeptical, to say the least.

As someone who has been doing research on both cars (i'm probably buying a new car to replace my '00 prelude in april/may):
From specs i've seen, the Rx-8 will have 255 hp somewhere in the 8k range on the tach and will weight just over 2800 lbs, which is close to what the s2000 weighs.
People who have reported participating in market research for the Rx-8 have relayed that they were asked multiple times to compare it to the Z, and which they liked better in what aspects, etc., so i think it is meant to be a direct competitor to the Z offering 1/4 times just a few tenths of a second off with the flexibility of 2 extra seats and a SWEET rear.
With that said, i dunno...i'm still prolly gonna go for the Z...my prelude has mostly top end power, and i think it'd be a fun change to actually have power from a stop for once.
