Default 350z "not a real z"

yeah, so the other day at work this guy and i start chatting. i was wearing a datsun shirt and he asked me about it. said he was going to tell the members of a local z club where to get them. blah blah blah. we were chatting and this guy asks me what i drive. i reply "a 350z"

he then gives me a look of disdain and tells me "oh...that's not a real z"

wtf? i then laugh and ask him "huh. ok, so you have a 'real' z then"

"....uh...well...i used to have a 240..."

how in god's name can someone classify the fairlady as "not a real z"?!

Well, you will get a lot purists saying that, and when you look at the first generation 300ZX (Z31) through the 350Z you can say the same thing, they became more comfort oriented and less bare sport cars which all makes did that.

The older Z's should thank and realize that the resurgence of the Z brand has been do to the 350Z.

He's not a true enthuziast then. Prior to its release I must say that I had my doubts about the concept car being a "real Z". Once released, reading about it & seeing it left no doubts. And now of course owning one I have to say it's absolutely an awesome Fairlady!

ah, thanks westpak. i dunno, i can see how someone could make the comment that it's not very close to the original z's. but i still think the newer gen z's have the same routes...

still interested on others thoughts on the subject...

Having owned a 240Z, 280Z, 300Z, and now a 350Z, the 350Z is probably the purest sports car, or "Z" of them all.

While the 300Z was the most comfortable (so is my Grandma's couch), the 280Z the sexiest (and my all time favorite car ever), and the 240 you had to appreciate it quickly before it disolved into a puddle of rust right before your very eyes.

I don't dis any Z car, and neither does anyone who knows WTF they are talking about.

He’s just jealous. You did the right thing by LAUGHING IN HIS FACE.

That is the same as saying only a 1953 Corvette is really a Corvette. Idiot.

PS. IndyZCar good post.
PPS.bixby I love to see you posts, that is my ALL TIME FAVORITE picture on this forum.

Yeah, the guy doesn't know what he's talking about. As this is my third Z (my first two were a 260 and 300), I think I have some understanding of what "Zness" is and the 350 absolutely HAS IT. If I was going to say that any Z wasn't a Z (and I would never make such a silly comment), it would be the Z's of the 90s which got away from the true Z spirit: a GREAT sports car, reasonably priced.

LOL. Yea, it's always a tough choice. Although, I usually go with the RED one.

we've had 3 240zs, 260z, 2 280zs,1 280zx, z31 and my 350z (most were my dads). Not to mention one of my uncles has a '90 and '91 z32tt and the other has a stage 4 z32tt. They love my car. My neighbors love it. Not one person has called it a non-z

There are bitter jealous people everywhere. You did good by shrugging them off. A week after I got my 350, some kid with an LS1 t/a kept going on about how I should of got a t/a instead of my z. I looked at him and said "if i wanted an ls1, I would of bought two" should of seen the look on his face
