Selling to CarMax
Carmax gave me a decent appraisal. If I end up selling to Carmax, do they cut a check for the full appraisal value? Are there any fees that they subtract from the appraisal when I actually sit down to sign the paperwork?

I did ask them and they said there are no surprises. I've never sold or purchased anything from them, so I was hoping to get feedback from someone that has. Carmax said they provide a check for the full value of the appraisal on the spot. 07 touring coupe with 80K and they're offering $13K.

For what it's worth, I bought my Z from CarMax. They gave me a decent price for my trade-in, and it was the best car buying experience I ever had. They were very clear with what the paperwork was, what my costs would be, and everything else I needed to know.
I've had my Z a little over a year, and haven't had one problem with it. I can't speak for other people's experiences with CarMax, but mine definitely was a positive one. They seem like a pretty stand up business in my opinion.

Their business is clear because they sell at full retail with no discounts so it's easy to make the paperwork very clear, they aren't trying to hide any fees because you are paying 100% of full price for the car every time.
They buy for a reasonable trade-in price if the car is re-salable because they know they will get full pop on the car once it's back on the lot. If your car is high mileage or damaged and would be wholesaled they really hit you low.

$13k isn't too bad, a little lower than private party but it beats selling on your own!
I remember when i had my 07 san marino blue enthutiast, meticulous condition, only 9k (yes 9000) miles, I brought it in to see what I could get - (was thinking of upgrading to a 370 at that time), long story short they offered me 14k for it, I ended up selling it a week later private part for $20,700.
That was last year (08/13)
I literally looked at the guy and asked him if he was serious, he said something along the lines off - we give a fair market value of the car. I then showed him on carmax that they had older Z's with 30k miles going for 22k+. His response was that they would need to do some work on the car, I asked him "what work? the car has 9000 miles"
He couldn't respond to that, I left.

I guess they're hit or miss. 13K works for me. It's on the low end but I end up saving time by avoiding the private sale route. Come in, hand in the keys and walk out with a check.

Years ago, they had just opened their local store and I was looking to sell my wife's Tahoe, so I stopped in just for grins to see what they'd offer. They took a look at it then promptly offered $4000 for it. I laughed in the guy's face. Sold it myself a week later for $8500. That's my CarMax experience. Haven't even so much as glanced over there when passing by ever since.

If carmax is one thing it's no bs. They are a chain and have a formula for making offers on cars. I mean they're in the business of buying and selling cars so any idiot would know they don't give you as much as what you can get if you sold it yourself. That being said, if you come in for an appraisal, it takes about 45 mins to an hour and they have an entire checklist that they go through. They'll give you an offer and it's good for 1 week I believe and if you come in with the car exactly in the same condition, you'll get a check on the spot.
They go by what's called black book value and sometimes lower than that.
You have a decent offer because your car has under 100k miles. Carmax can sell cars that have under a 100k miles directly from any of their stores. Cars with over 100k are never sold at Carmax, they are sold to private dealers and auctions which means you get less money for it.

Yeah actually I was wrong about the 100k+ miles part but I remember reading somewhere on their website that they tend not to buy over 100k miles. But just like any car, they'll even take aftermarket parts if the demand is there for the car.
