Hey guys, I did a search before and was unsuccessful and i just wanted to know what type of oil you guys use in ur Z's. I was thinking of using mobil 1 super synthetic 5w-30. What do you guys think ? anything better ? or should i not go with 5w-30 ? thanks guys

You can find someone in here that will tell you just about anything you could possibly want to hear.

Personally I switched to Mobil ! after what I think was a good breakin period of 3000 miles. Most guys/girls in here would agree that a good synthetic is the way to go after breakin.

Also many switch to Redline in their trans and rear also.

Try searching "engine breakin" or something like that...there are 100's of threads and responses.

Break-in, smrake-in! I don't own a Z, but....

Change it to synthetic whenever. Car manufactures are now delivering cars with synthetic already in it. Go for it, man. I love Mobil 1. I would just keep it to the recommended weight from Nissan.

Don't forget to get a high quality filter, like the Mobile 1 filter (I like the nut on the end for ease of removal) to clean it well. Don't skimp on the filter!

Synthetic is too slick for break-in. Change with reg oil at 500 miles then Mobile 1 at 3000 and every 3000...

 

Misconception #1 of synthetic oil.

Like I said, why else would so many manufactures REQUIRE synthetic oil and IS DELIVERED WITH IT? Do you think they run a car with the odometer disconnected for 3K miles and then change it? Well? Huh? Riiight. Thought so.

Prove to me that I'm wrong with scientific documentation and I'll look into it.

True, I drive an S2000, and I live by the synthetic. Very noticible change on older cars. Much better viscosity

 

Hey guys, I don't know much about oil viscosity or the real differences between reg and syn, and while I'm sure there's hundreds of posts on this already, I don't have hundreds of hours to read (sorry).

Having said that, can anyone answer a myth for me as true or false?

The myth is (from some friends of mine) that synthetic is so thin that it can leak through the piston rings, which is why you never switch to synthetic on an older car with high mileage? The one thing that doesn't make much sense to me is that if the piston rings wear out a little over mileage, wouldn't it be bad to keep on using synthetic at high mileage regardless of when you started using it?

Oh, and why is it that everyone always says that once you go synthetic, you cannot switch back to regular?

I have never heard of the so thin, it can leak through piston rings myth.

The other one is that it somehow does something to the seals/gaskets, where, when you switch back to dino oil, it begins to leak. Oh yeah, that's a myth as well.

Yes it is price-e, but in the long run your motor will love it!!! just my 50 cent.

 

You're not kidding...dealer wants ~$70 for Mibil1 changes. I did my last car at Jiffy Lube, which was a little cheaper at ~$60/change. I can do my own, but always figured it would be better to have a record of it when buying a brand new car...at least for the first 100k miles.

 

$70 for an oil change! Did they supply the Mobil 1? If they did, it's still kind of pricey. I bought 5 qts for $25 at K-Mart and the dealer charged me $15 (labor and oil filter).

 

Yeah... I bought Mobil 1 and filter for about $45 CND here... $70 USD for that is a bit much

 

I WENT TO COSTCO AND GOT 6QTS. FOR 23$. I THINK THEY HAVE THE BEST PRICES. IM RUNNING THE STOCK FILTER. DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE FILTER WILL WORK JUST FINE!!!!

 

I love oil threads. If you have the dealer change your oil and filter every 3K miles the engine will last longer than the rest of the car. I would change it myself and run Mobil 1 5w30 but like someone else said "as long as it is under warranty I don't want any problem if something goes wrong" Plus this thing would be a pain in the butt to jack up and take off the bottom cover etc. Not worth my time or hassle. I do change the oil/filter in my 1995 Toyota Landcruiser and use Mobil 1 5w30 and OEM filter every 5K miles but it is easy to work on and it now has over 135K miles on it and no leaks.

His post above that said he switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic at 7,500 miles. My friend told me to get my Mobil 1 at Costco because it's not as much, but the drive was too far for me.

 

Don't you have an owner's manual? It should say in there what the recommended weight oil is.

 

Costco sells Mobil 1 in cases of 6 1-quart bottles for $23.
