Default Choice of 225/40/18 or 225/50/18? Michelin Pilots.. HELP!

They have the correct size for my rear tires but they don't make the standard stock size 225/45/18's.. My choices are 225/40/18 or 225/50/18, would either make a negitive difference since I will have 45 series on the rear? I'm getting them at cost so I realy need to make a decision.. Thanks in advance!

Use 245/40/18s in the front with 245/45/18 or 255/45/18 in the back. The 245/40s in the front will actually help reduce the understeer that shows it's head with the stock 225/45 size. Of the sizes you mentioned the first would be too small on outer diameter, the second to big.

Good Luck

I concur with lowrider.

If you can get a 245/40 in front it would be perfect.

Otherwise, I'm not sure which is better.

if your going smaller in front, dont go with 255 in back, your making the difference worse.

not that you were suggesting that, just FYI about low riders post.

Id say the 40 too. you could do 245/40/18 in front... it will fit. itll help with understeer too.

Thanks alot for the help guys!

One quick thing just to clarify, I was thinking that going much wider then a 225-235 in the front would not fit on the stock rim since they are narrower then the rear. So the lower profile series effects tire width or since the sideways are smaller they can withstand a larger rim?

I'm sure Pilot Sports come in 225/45 and 245/45 in 18s. If that's the tire you are getting.

The performance Z has 8" wide rims in front and back, so you should be fine with a 245 up there. It's the track model with 8" in front and 8.5" in back. The 17" wheels are 7.5" in front and 8" in back, and some people are racing with 275's in front on the 7.5" wheel (very very extreme)

I'm AutoXing with a 265/35 on the 8" wide rims, but that's very extreme (only one "very" since it's not as extreme as the 275 on the 7.5" rim) and is probably not the best for a street setup.

Anyway, long story short, a 245/40 on the front is fine.

What about the Touring Model (6 speed)? I have 225/45/18 up front and 245/40/18 rear. Are my rims the same width front and rear?

Your rear tires should be 245/45/18. Go look again. the 225/45 and 245/45/18s will maintain the stagger. 225/45 and 245/40 would have no stagger and would affect VDC (if you have it). I believe the Touring 6MT does. It will also affect the slip.

Actually no, its pretty silly IMO.. They don't have any 45 series for any sizes under 245, they skipped the 45 series and only have 40 or 50.. It shows all the available sizes directly on the Michelin site, also the guy I am getting the tires at cost from varified it with his Michelin dealer and no 45 series, thus this discussion

Once again guys thanks alot. I am getting 245/40/18's put on the front and 255/45/18's on the rear, I am getting this done this coming Monday.

Hopefully with these better tires I can get my 60' down at the track consistantly, I only managed 1 run in about 20 better then a 2.1 (2.047) and most are at 2.15-2.25 with the craptenzas... And I am getting the Borla True Duel in March, my goal this season is a 13.8 or better, last season was getting into the 13's and I accomplished that..
