"You guys think I should take it directly to the dealer I bought it from? (40 minutes away with stop and go traffic) or you think that the dealer 2 minutes from my house would take car of it?"

I think when it comes down to it, it's a crap shoot. If it were me, I would take it to the dealer that has the better reputation. Unfortunately here there is only one dealer, the next one is 30 minutes awat and their reputation is HORRIBLE. So I put up with it.

Either way...Good Luck!

Just plan on budgeting for front tires on a regular basis.

I'm not in denial but I don't have many miles on my 04 (not 04.5) Z yet, only a little over 9K. I do monitor them pretty regularly and have seen cupping in rear tires of another car before and seen feather on the fronts of that and other cars. I've also see the pics up here.

Hopefully I don't experience it cuz I'm past the 12 months and might be SOL.

My build date is 2/04 and i also started experiencing the noise and feathering at about 8000. took it to the dealer. they said since i have an 04 there was no tsb, only 03. but they would call nissan for approval. they did approve it and i have my tires ordered. Wonder how long these will last. Driving the z with the feathered tires just makes me feel like im driving a $600 car, its rediculous after spending $30,000. Next time im going European.

The last I heard they were covering them for 24 months - unlimited mileage. I have nealy 8,000 on my 4.5 - no signs of problems as yet.

I have a 04 (not 04.5) and at 9,000 miles the feathering just showed up. My dealer also said, no TSB on 04s only 03s. I had to call Nissan and they are running it past their warranty department and will call me on monday. I am going to be very upset if they dont cover it. VERY upset.

Post 04 Touring Problems...

I have 2004 Touring model which I bought back in December, 2003. I took my Z for 15K maintenance to the dealership in Laurel, Maryland where I bought it from.

Once they check all things around, there are couple problem they noticed including tire feathering. I might be ignorant and it's my first time driving a sports car, but I thought it was usual.

Anyway, the mechanic thought it was something wrong with the alignment then later found out it was actually a problem with unusal wearing of front tires. I was pissed off but thought that it should be covered under the warranty considering it's only 10 mo old and 15K miles. However, the dealer is telling me that the Nissan warranties under 12K so the manager is trying his way to find out if they will do it as a courtesy call.

I am waiting to hear from them and glad to find out that I am not the only one with this kind of problem.

So far I noticed the windows scratching sound when it's wet and took it back to dealership couple times but all they could do was to lubricate it. They said it's just how it is with the materials they used.

The second problem I noticed was the metallic sound under the seat which they ordered the new parts under the warranty b/c it was unusual wear again.

Then I replaced the trunk rear suspension bar b/c it was tilted after driving it for 5K miles.

I am not an aggressive driver and there are so many little problem I see with the car. I am kind worried that it will keep happen down the road and there are other problems with '04 model that I am not aware of.

Anybody knows other problems I should check, please let me know. You can email me at brandonjlee2000@yahoo.com also.

I am really hoping they will cover the replacing the tires; otherwise, I might even consider taking the car to carmax and get a new European car....

I even bought my old 98 Maxima from the same dealership so I'm hoping their faithful customer service.

Default KTM - Which dealer in So Cal?

Just hit 19k on my 2004 and I am starting to get the noise. My dealer gave me the BS that they can't do anything for 04's.

The dealer where I bought my car kept making me schedule appointments to do a 5 minute inspection, and when they would check, they kept telling me that the tread depth was ok, eventhough there was evidence of feathering.

I called the other dealership and they asked for the year of my car. As soon as I told them, they said bring it down and we'll check right now. I ran down there at lunch and within 5 minutes I had new tires ordered. No hassles.

I have blown off the dealership where I bought my car. Hell, the other dealership even replaced my steering wheel (damn thing costs $700!!!) because the leather was deteriorating on the left side.

I have one that was build in Oct 03 with a VIN over 60k (so maybe its a 04.5?) and I was getting the LOUD tire howl at about 8k. I finally took the car to the stealership at about 10.5k and complained about the noise. They replaced the tires without pitching too much of a fit and then did an alignment for free. Just tell them you KNOW they are doing replacement for 04's and they should take care of you. They denied replacement at first, but I told them what NNA told me:

"The dealer should submit the necessary documentation and it will probably be approved."

Good luck to all.

I have a 04 Track (12/03 build date). Just started getting the tire roar at 8k miles. From what I've heard there's a lot of 04s experiencing the same problem. I'm going to take it in to the dealership in a couple of weeks. I waited to get an 04 hoping to avoid this problem but of course now I might be screwed cause Nissan only recognizes this problem for 03s.

Which dealership did you use in your area? I do not live that far from you. I have an '04 Enthusiast with a build date of 7/03. I got free front tires and alignment at 11k.

I love the car, but I hate the constant alignment stuff, especially when you can't just take it any old alignment place. Even my Nissan dealer said he did not have the machine required by Nissan to align the car.

Well, let's keep a tire fund going!

Are there any web sites, previous threads or does anyone know the changes made from the '04 to '04.5??

I highly recommend getting your alignment checked - new car or not. Nissan puts these things out without doing it. My new 2004 was WAY off at 500 miles (thought I'd get it checked). The toe should be set at .04 & mine was between .36 & .47 all away around - WAY, WAY off. My dealer it did the alignment at no charge (warranty) because it was so far off. Haven't seen any problems at this point, Being that I'm getting ready to put $960 worth of tires on Nismo rims tomorrow morning (Eagle F1 GS-D3's), I've decided to have the alignment checked at each oil change - just to keep it honest.

Just my opinion............
i have a 04 touring z. I just got it for Xmas, It has 1400 miles on it. My dealer did alignment this week. The car pulls to the right. What dealer do you go to in Lexington?? I lives there for 10 years.

Unhappy

My 2004.5 base model started roaring @ ~11K miles. Finally made it to the stealership (where I bought it) last Friday w/ 14K on the odometer. After some explaining to the tune of "I know about the problem so don't blow smoke up my ****" and a 2.5 hour wait, I was informed that the tires were swapped to their opposite sides, and a 4 wheel alignment was performed...all free of charge. This made me happy enough to go home, although I would have been happier w/ new fronts.

***I would like to add that in discussing the main "reason" for the problem, the service manager told me that this problem will never be fixed..."it's due to the low profile tires and current suspension geometry". Not sure what that means, but I asked him that when the roar comes back, will the same tire swap and alignment be performed for free? He responded with a "Maybe" (which I take as a "No"), and that they will do nothing at 30K miles.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the feathering returns sooner than later (within 2-3K miles). If so, I'm going back for another freebie "fix".

Anyway, just thought you other '04 owners would like to know. I thought my car was exempt of the feathering issue, but it got unbearable at 14K miles. Good luck y'all!

Yes, when I drove my 04 home on Feb 20th, 2004 I noticed the tires were noisy. I put up with them - since I didnt notice any unusual wear - I have over 18000 miles on the car. Last week I received the notice from Nissan that they would replace them. Since I had more than 1/8 inch tread remaining they replaced the front tires and did an alignment at no charge. I notirced immediately the lack of noise - and can actually hear the engine as I reduce speed to below 20 mph.
