Question Seriously

Seriously though, guys. Do any of the Mods have an estimate on when the Search functions will be back up? It's really hard to find things without it.

I haven't seen any new word at all. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone is working on it at all. I completely understand that sometimes things break (I mean heck, I'm a system admin, too), but the least they could do is give us a quick update as to the situation. Just make another sticky post saying what's up.

Yeah, I'm in IT as well and we have to keep the user's up to date on what is and isn't working.

Just a little info on when it might be back up would be cool. I'm sure that they are busy though.

Yeah, at least have the decency to lie to us. Tell us within 2 weeks. That's usually a good number with plenty of fudge room so you can extend it if need be.

WTF Mate!!!!

I have to say, as someone who's written a search engine, it's a b*tch to write, and an ever bigger b*tch to fix when it goes down. So yeah it sucks that it's down, but we definitely need to cut the mods some slack (not that anyone's all over them).

This site uses vBulletin, which is a commercial product. If it's the vBulletin system that's broken, then they need to contact the vBulletin support folks for some help. No need to rewrite anything. I'm guessing either:

1) Their database got corrupted.

2) Their vBulletin system got corrupted.

Number 1 requires someone that knows their way around MySQL (I believe that's what the site uses). If it's bad enough, the normal procedure for a site like this might be to just restore from backups. Too late for that now, though, since it's been so long since the problem occured. Now the corruption just has to be manually fixed.

Number 2 requires support from vBulletin, or at least a reinstall of the site software. Reinstalling the site won't kill all the data since that's all stored in the database. It's all just a pain in the rear.

There could be other possibilities, but these seem reasonable.

SUre you can. And when they say it doesn't work, you just tell them they did it wrong.

Search has now been down almost a month. It is starting to look like the owners of this site just don't care anymore. This not only looks bad for the site, but also the sponsors of the site. I think it's just a matter of time before the sponsors bail and the site is left to rot.

But as you can see, there is absolutely no lack of traffic on this site. Despite the search being down, the membership continues to grow. I don't see business suffering anytime soon.
