My tip for you is not to get the fix done. I had mine done by my dealer in a forced effort. I had had the car for about 2 months and was actually there for the feathering issue and we were at a deadlock with NNA, another story. But so my dealer could look like they were doing something, offered the info about the recall on the amp about how it fixed the overboosted bass, which i had noticed but had no real problem with. at that time i was not involved in this website. well after that not only did i lose the bass almost completely, i also lost my audio-pilot. you have to really listen to notice the car turning the radio up or down, dealer says its still working. its as if all the fix did was offer another amp with narrower ranges. the bass level from bass0 to bass+5 sounds exactly the same. if you are into concert/symphony music its great!!

They replaced my amp, and my stereo sounds like crap. No bass what so ever. Very little anyway. I am not at all impressed with the Bose sound system. My S2000 had a nicer sound! What is this talk about audio pilot and the sound going up and down??? How do I turn that on? I had no clue about that!

the audio pilot is the feature that keeps the sound in the cockpit at a constant level in relation to exterior noise such as when you start going faster, the volume gets turned up. It is monitored by a microphone in the paneling by the drivers gas pedal, kinda under the cd changer console. I think any z equipped with the bose also had the audio pilot option. the 2003 model has no way to turn that on or off like the 04's do, its just on and in fact was where the overboosted bass problem was first noticed. as i speed up the pilot turned the volume on the stereo up along with the other componenets like bass and treble. but when i slowed down, the pilot would turn everything down but the bass. thus at very average volume levels the bass that was set high was drowning everything out. thus this amp fix put in a unit that must have a narrower range that also killed the audio pilot.

I read on another thread where someone had indicated that BOSE meant 'Buy Other Sound Equipment'.

LMAOL that was funny ish Ratty. There is a thread floating around with DIY to disable that damn audio pilot microphone. Also I could not get the fix but did get the Grease streaks on the windows fixed.

For those that have had their Bose amp changed because of the overzealous 'Audio Pilot' turning up the bass too loud...the amp they replaced the original amp with had problems of it's own, namely you now lost control of the boost or cut feature on the bass frequencies...but from reading this post it seems that many are still not aware that NNA put out another TSB for this fix! I had my amp changed twice under both TSBs and the problems were solved with the second change...check with your dealer if you had the original amp changed and are having problems controling the bass boost and cut..they have a fix

I could not get the bose fix since my vin was not within the recall numbers. The service guy said I would have to pay for it even though I'm still under warranty....

Where is the amp located in our car? Can I pull it out and put an aftermarket one in there? Teh sub too. Can I just replace it with a different brand but keep my stock speakers and radio?

When you press the 'Audio' button you have cotrol of the volume of the bass and treble frequencies. You can set them higher or lower. The second amp that fixed the 'Audio Pilot' problem, would not allow you to change the bass setting. In other words the bass sounded the same at +5 or -5...the third amp fixed that problem.

The amp is located in the hatch area over the left rear wheel. They had to take the spare out and remove most of the panels inside the hatch area to get to it Not something I would try but then I'm not that handy

Not sure of the vins but if you do a search you will probably find it here...I would think that if you brought the car to the dealer and demonstrated the problem they might take care of it for you...

Had the dealer put in my 3rd Amp a few days ago under NTB03-086 dated October 1, 2003. Looks like it is for cars built before Sept 27 2002, between VIN # 3T000002 - 005614 and between 3T100024 - 104719. I had got the interim fix about a year ago, some refurbished AMP I think. Sound was acceptable after that, but the Audio-Pilot did not work..very noticable to me since I have a sunroof and the stereo did not adjust in volume when I opened it and introduced some wind noise. With this 3rd Amp...sound I think sounds a bit better, Audio-Pilot does seem to work as I need to adjust volume much less when opening/closing sunroof, Bass is ok. So good enough for me.

Also did the Windows Grease streak fix, the new alignment fix, but had to buy new tires since I've got 32K on the car. Hopefully the tire roar noise will be gone forever. My total Toe is now +.11 degrees versus -.10 before (not quite the .2 the TSB recommends, but in the Nominal range). Had them put on Hawk HPS front pads and new OEM rotors. Replaced rear pads and rotors with OEM also. Hopefully the Hawk will mean much less dust on the front. I've still got the noise from engine area when A/C is on (there is a TSB on it)...which dealer seems to think is normal, but I think it is too loud...will need to compare to other 350Zs next time I'm in a group of them.
