Default All West coast ports closed!!!!

Looks like the longshoremen have been told not to report to work. All ships anchoring off-shore. This includes ALL major ports on west coast. Could cost 1 billion dollars A DAY!!! Hope no one has their Z sitting on a ship out there.

Check out link below for more information

There's 119 cars in port according to rxo.

Hope they resolve it within the next 20 days.

This is not good news! My car is supposed to be delivered 10/23 and could possibly be on one of those ships being held-up in the Pacific! Just my luck.

Default We have about ten days.

I want to qualify the following information as a qualified guess. I have the Nissan shipping schedule for L.A. Port as Follows:

United Spirit 7/18/2002 8/6/2002
World Spirit 7/23/2002 8/9/2002
Hual Traveller 8/6/2002 8/25/2002
United Spirit 8/22/2002 9/18/2002
World Spirit 8/25/2002 9/9/2002
Hual Traveller 9/11/2002 9/30/2002
United Spirit 9/26/2002 10/15/2002
World Spirit 10/5/2002 10/24/2002

First date column is Yokohama's departure date, second L.A. DEPARTURE date ( meaning the ships arrive some time before that date and are unloaded and loaded almost simultaneously for departure as scheduled)

In speaking with Nissan individuals in the West Regional Office, I have been told that cars already unloaded (all in port) WILL NOT be affected by a strike.

So there is about a ten day window of time before the next ship arrives. Keep your fingers crossed.

Another prime example at how unionization ruins the consumer market. *sigh* When will people ever learn?

Question

Does this affect those due to receive their cars on the East Coast?? My Z is expected to arrive mid October.

Cars that come from Japan arrive at which port for the East Coast??

Thanks in advance...

Long Beach Nissan called me Sunday afternoon and told me my car would be available today or Tuesday, 1 Oct ! They said they could call me as soon as it arives. This looks like my car is going to sit there for awhile! This is not good. What the heck, I've waited about 7 months whats another delay?

Drive a tight line....

Can a bussinesses that are afected by the strike and have and have nothing to do with is seek damages for the port closing as a result of a strike?? anyone know? I am just wondering b/c it seems a little wrong for the entire economy to take a hit just b/c someone does not like what they are getting payed and can don't have the skills to leave to get a job that they can be happy at. Yes there are times to strike, I don't know the specifices if this strike the media tells us a lot but then again it keeps a lot from us. the strike nomatter the conciquences are probably not good for thoes that are striking if they really looked at the situation closely as it seems that if they are having to strike then they have not been sucessful in the past to actually work out a contract that benifits them in the future and not jsut now....

I don't want to seem like I am jsut hamering on them but tipically and specifically in modern society unions hurt the economy and thoes that are part of the union rather then help.

ps. sorry about typos, don't see any but I know they are there....I am soooo tired

there is a concept in contract law called 'force majeure' - means superior or irresistable force. Most contracts have such a clause to protect the parties in the event that a part of the contract cannot be performed due to causes outside the control of the parties to the contract...like maybe an unanticipated strike by dockworkers. So, I would suspect you can get no damages unless the contract otherwise allows. I would think the contracts between the parties shipping an entire ship load of new cars is as thick as the 'S' encyclopedia.

and yes, 'hedonist' this does, in my lowly opinion, point out the continuing irrelevence of trade unions. I heard the crane operators who operate the big overhead cranes make like $115,000 a year or something like that. [You really need to get rid of that dead cat tho, it STINKS!]

Not to be too nit picky, but it isn't a strike. The shipping companies have locked out the longshoremen. My main concern is that this will cause some sort of retaliation by the longshoremen which will trigger another action by the shippers and we get a long, messy run of stuff being damaged in offloading.

Jimmy:

Transports delivering cars on the east coast take a totally different route than ones delivering cargo to the west coast. (In short, they're not the same boats).

Depending on where you live, your car could be dropped off at any of about five or six ports. If you live in CT, I think your car comes out of Newark.
