Exotic Exhaust Tones ?
I’m planning to change the exhaust of my roadster in the coming weeks. I’m looking for an exhaust that is not too loud, well build and that keep the exotic tone of the stock exhaust. I remember reading a thread about some 30 years old (I’m 30) looking for exhausts that were not too noisy but unfortunately I was not able to find this thread again (the fact that the search engine is not working did not help). Anyway, after reading thru this forum and listening to many sound clips I narrow my search to three exhausts: Stillen, Nismo, and Borla. I’d like to know what you guys think about those exhausts, especially concerning the way they sound. In addition, if anybody has one of these installed on his Z, and live in the Pasadena area I will really appreciate if I could listen to it before making my final decision. Thanks everybody.

i have the stillen and yes it is heavy and not to cheap, but i LOVE the sound... i think it sounds exotic in a way that it has a unique tone... even to other 350 exhauts out there.
I have hard time to believe that everybody in the Pasadena area has a stock exhaust...
Please, I need to listen to those exhausts before making a final decision. Or I guess I'll have to wait for the next Z meeting....

My advice is to listen to the exhausts in person from inside the car while driving under load (not just reving in neutral) unless you are willing to incur the cost of experimentation.
I'm over 40 (old
) and I just put on the Nismo exhaust about three weeks ago.
Compared to stock, the sound is a little louder and definitely deeper in tone. There's a nice rumble when you first start the car and it sounds really nice during low to medium throttle application, and when you step on it the sound is great. There's a little more noticeable rumble when cruising at freeway speeds but it is not unpleasant.
The only disappointment compared to the stock exhaust is that the Nismo sounds quieter during decelleration...when you downshift and the engine revs climb up at first then drop off. The stock exhaust had a nice, exotic tone to it which seems to be missing in the Nismo.
Overall I'm very satisified.
