You must have signed over your car to them at the time they signed over the Z to you....
I'd find that paperwork and fax/send a copy to whoever wants payment on the volvo.....
See if that can make them hold their horses for a little bit.
Maybe you could track down the salesguy and see if he can give you a statement verifying that you did trade in the car. If he doesnt work there anymore it shouldnt be a big deal to him/her...

Update:
I spoke to several different people.
Attorney Generals Office: Per AG, there is nothing they can do and refer me to New Motor Vehicle Board
New Motor Vehicle Board: Per NMVB, there is nothing they can do because the dealership is now closed. Refer me to DMV IU.
DMV IU: Has yet to return my call but I filled out all the documents and prepared a package which i will be sending out tonight.
I also contacted local news crew and several other organization to see if they can assist me. Thank you all for your assistance. I truly mean it.

Jesus christ, I feel for you man. If there is an investigation, who knows how long the cars are going to be locked up. What exactly is a lawyer going to do? Who are you going to sue and for what? The dealer closed because it has no money.

I tried on late Friday but it was already closed. I will be contacting him first thing Monday.
UPDATE:
It looks as though the DA will be investigating the closure. Apparently there are still customers who cant retrieve their car from the service department.

San Rafael Nissan is under investigation by Marin County District Attorney, DMV IU, Bureau of Automitive Repair, and NNA.
I have been in close contact with all of them and it looks as though I have enough people on my side to fight this off.
So you know, there are 2 other people that are going through the same thing as I am.
Thanks for all your support.
hfm,
I have not received a call back from the guy you refer me to. Big thanks to you again.
