Nisaan is concerned with selling new cars, not resale value on a car they sold a year ago. As long as they sell Z's and make a profit, they will keep doing so. In addition, the Z is the banner performance car for Nissan, it advertises an image. People come in to look at a Z and after considering the function of a sedan, might just buy a Altima 3.5 liter since they have kids.

Production starts in August. I doubt production has stopped yet, but it's not entirely impossible. It will most likely be stopping soon if it hasn't though. They only make Zs a few months at a time. They took a month or two off at the beginning of this year. That's when everyone was waiting an insane amount of time to get the Zs they had ordered.

Those figures were for sales up to Jan. '04. The MY '04 continues and cars are still being sold (I bought one this month). I'm sure that when the '04 MY is completed just as many or more 350Z's will have been sold as in the '03 MY.

Doubtful. The RX-8 came out and took a big bite out of Nissan's share (how many comparison tests did the 350Z lose to the RX-8?). EVO's and STI's hit the streets. This downward sales trend will only continue as all-new and significantly improved Corvettes and Mustangs hit the showrooms. In addition, 2 years from now there will be even newer cars to compete with the Z (supposedly a new Lexus IS300 with a coupe version and V8 option - a new Supra from the same platform, maybe?)

I'm not flaming the car, I just don't think that the 350Z is going to be maintaining market share as it ages - only the 3 Series and the Corvette seem to be able to manage that feat.

The V8 option to the Lexus IS is going to be called the IS430. That should be a pretty fast car.

That ‘sales’ chart is a fine example of how you can skew statics to show whatever you want.
Note the dates in the fine print: Sales figures are from October 2003 to January 2004 for the model year 2004 and October 2002 to January 2003 for the model year 2003.

First, they have only picked 4 months to represent a year’s sales. Secondly, Z sales were higher in 10/02 – 01/03 because it was a brand new car and the demand for the new Z was extraordinary high after no Z model for the previous several years.

Actually sales figures:
2002 - 13,253
2003 - 36,728
2004 (thru 04/04) - 11,266
(source: www.infinitinews.com)

At 61,247 units, Nissan’s Z sales are right on target. They were aiming at 35,000 a year and they are not having problems reaching that sales mark, thank you very much.

You can skew monthly sales figures to show whatever you want. Remember it’s the bottom line that counts.

Peace

But remember, the Eclipse is always the Eclipse. In Japan, the Fairlady Z is always the Fairlady Z. It's just here the name changes based on the engine..

Default Mustangs and sports cars

UGH! Even though I'm no Mustang or Ford fan, it drives me up the wall when the myth about the Z being the "top selling" sports car continues to be perpetuated. It's not true! The Mustang totally outsells the Z by an almost 5:1 ratio.

Take a look at:

But the Mustang isn’t a sports car. Comparing it to the Z is talking “apples vs. oranges”.

I think a more aped comparison would be with the Corvette, Crossfire, & Viper, the only true American sports cars. (And the Crossfire really isn’t American). Of course comparing these Z to them is also ‘apples vs. oranges’, with the Crossfire being the closest. And their sales YTD are 11,570, 4,285, and 593 respectively.

IMO the Boxster, TT, & S2000 are the Z’s closest competition.

But that is what I love about the Z, it is a class of it’s own. There is no other car “like” it for the price, performance, & style.

THE EVO MAY BE SPECIAL - BUT I WOULDNT EVEN KNOW WHAT ONE LOOKS LIKE. THE FIRST 350 I SAW - I KNEW IT WAS SOMETHING SPECIAL. PERHAPS THERE ARE NO EVOS IN ARIZONA?, OR ARENT THEY EYE-CATCHING?

I think that to be considered a true sports car, all the trim levels have to be sports cars. That's why the WRX and EVO are not listed. The regular Imprezas and Lancers are not sports cars. Same with the Mustang. The regular Mustangs are not sports cars. Only the V8 Mustangs are. And most people buy the V6 ones.

I wouldn't worry to much about Nissan staying ahead of the game with the Z. They have alot of options available to them to punch up the power and keep the Z looking very attractive to buyers.

The re-introduction of the Z was perfectly executed. Alot of time, money and pride went into this project. To sit idle and watch it go down hill and slip away.........Nissan will not.

For 2004 their focus was getting the Roadster released. They can now concentrate on improvements to the models.

I plan to see a TT or some other addition to pump up the power on the Z 2005 or 2006.
