Default Abuse to your Z " dooh"

Well so far I have bounced on redline once while racing a BMW Z3, accidentally released the cluth before I shifted to first ( fixing to stop), and finally I let my friend mechanic drive my Z and he missed gears going from 4th to 3rd instead of 4th to 5th. After every incident happened , i always felt that I was sick to my stomach. But on the bright side, my Z is still running goood like new.

Nice try...A rev limiter can't protect your engine from a mis-shift. There's no way to protect an engine from being over-driven by the transmission when you down-shift instead of up-shift.....Just a fact of life. It can protect you from accelerator induced over-revving, though, which the OP did indicate he had done.

The rev-limiter is a largely mis-understood safety device, it seems.

Also, about rev limiters, there are two types (to my knowledge)
1. fuel cutoff
2. electronic cutoff

We have fuel cutoff rev limiters in our Z's. This works fine, until you turbo or SC it. If you overrev, and hit the limiter with a turbo or SC car, the fuel cutoff will cook your motor. This is why people opt for MSD ignition boxes (or the like) so they can use an electronic (spark) cutoff.

Hey Dave,
I posted awhile back about mis-shifting from 3rd back to 2nd instead of 4th during a street-race, and I got soooooo many replies about how it was ok because the Z has a rev-limiter. Kind of amusing. I thought that's what you meant since the OP mentioned that his friend mis-shifted from 4th gear into 3rd. My bad.
