Default My Z does not swim

Well, I knew that before attempting to get through some pretty deep water. But I had to go for it, I had no other choice. It was obviously too deep and the car just died, right there in the middle of the deepest part of the water. Had to push it out and get towed to the dealer. Now just waiting to see how bad it is. Anybody know what I should expect?

How deep was it? Could you give an estimate. If it was deep enough to submerge your air intake, you can kiss your engine goodbye.

I'm curious.... how come you had to go through 2 feet of water? Couldn't reverse? Or do anything else?

Where in New Jersey was this - interested in details.

...but I had no choice..... because killing my car and having to have it towed was my only option? Are you female by any chance? I know... the Z is kindof heavy.... but it ain't no freakin boat!! What is wrong with you mannnn??? heheh

Hydrolock. Fuel + air + water = bad. Water doesn't compress like gas and causes abnormal stress on internals. Hopefully you didn't crank the engine 50 million times trying to start it. Most likely you will be having some engine work done.

Please do us a favor and don't drive the Z through any more lakes... ok? The thought of a dead Z makes us all sad. Check out smartmotorist.com too..

Guys, chill out. Although it may seem like it, I'm not a moron. Under the circumstances, I had no choice. Smaller friggin Toyotas made it through. It's a rental, albeit a long term one, it's insured, and it's fixable.

Its probably a lease.

I know the dealer won't cover it, you better hope the insurance company does.

Next time, get one of those snorkels for the intake. Someone photochopped on another post floating around here.

You were saying other smaller cars were making it through.

Do you realize the Z is lower than most if not all other makes?
The only other smaller toyota I can think of is, a MR2.

Lemme know if your selling any mods, I'll buy your S'03's.

Since it just went up to the door sills, I doubt you did any serious damage. Probably just threw some water up on your engine with your radiator fans and got water on the coils or something.

I remember that snorkel intake...haha. Made especially for people who like to drive their Z's into deep water.

Did you try going right behind another car and let them push the water out of the way for you.

It may sound silly, but it can work.

shesh, I absolutly REFUSE to go threw even a 1 mm thick layer of water on the road, I will stop, turn around ,and go around no matter how long it takes. Much less 2 feet!! No water splashing up on the Z for me!

Sorry for giving you a hard time bfg...I was only joking... it's just this is the type of thing peoples wives usually do.... blonde wives.

Water up to the doors is close to being too deep. Following someone is also not a good idea. It's best to keep the engine revved fairly high and slowly proceed through. You don't want to plow through someone elses waves, that just makes it worse. The smartest thing to do is not go through if you have the slightest doubt.

Anyway... let us know what happens with the car.....

It's cool Zspeed, I would have made a similar crack or two. Next time I'll bring a damm canoe. I should know later this week what the deal is.

BFG, hey.....my wife is the one who drove my Z through the water recently (see thread from about two weeks ago). It was also about two feet of water, same thing, died right in the middle, had to have it towed. Long story short $4,200 damage, all electrical no internal engine damage. Could have been worse, insurance covered all of it. As long as you did not go plowing through the water, it does not sound like the water was high enough to enter the air intake which is about as high as your headlights.....unless you have an aftermarket intake. Good luck

Thanks NH115. I have a stock intake. so my situation sounds similar. Hopefully it's not any worse. The worst part is that I'm without my Z for the time being. I'm forced to drive my winter beater.

How about that line from Risky Business... "Who's the U Boat Commander?" I guess it's me. And not that it matters one bit, but it was lower than the door panels.

One caveat, the dealer maybe trying to go all the way for a few extra bucks in repairs. So, whether it's more than just electrical or really the whole engine is hard to tell. Either way, it doesn't much matter, as long as they repair it to spec.
