As far as high octane pump gas, 76 stations only sell 100 octane, not 110. There are also Sunoco stations around the country (east coast, maybe?) that also sell high octane. Once again, I think 100 is as high as you can go there. All the gasolines I've seen higher than 100 octane have been leaded, and you do *not* want to put leaded gas in your engine.

For example, if you're mixing 91 and 100, use the first chart.

 

you only need 93octain .So mix 2(5$) gals of 100 w/ 17gals. of 91 that will get you 93ish & when you tack over 4000 your engine will not be knocking.

We have 93 all over VA here. I have no idea where to find higher octanes but there have to be some around. My buddy has a supra tt (97) and i think he runs 103 octane sometimes.

 

Yeah, it's a pain . . . especially if you are having that fuel monitor issue that alot of us have - myself included.

Gas attendents always tell me my tank must be full when it is sitting on 'E'.

 

IN newjersey i found sunoco has 94 octane..

 

Colorado has the following 85, 87, and our epic 91.

 

These posts make me sad, yet I read them anyway. Cali gas not only cost far beyond the rest of the states, but it also gets only 91 octane gas.

 

Used to live in NY... 94 Sunoco gas.. Then moved back to California. only 91 Octane.. (reformulated gasoline?)

 

Hey i got a question, here in holland we got 98 octane everywhere (95 is the lowest you can get) but now i have found this fuel, it's called ELF 124, and as the name implies, it has 124 octane, but now my question... what does the higher octane mean? i couldn't find anything good on the search

Neo, keep in mind Europe uses a different formula to get their numbers, so 91 oktan = 87 octane (butchering some German here). I bet that your 98 octane is about equal to our 93 or 94. Don't have any idea about your 124 stuff.

In any case, octane measures resistance to combustion (vaguely like Ohms measure resistance to conductivity). The higher the octane, the harder it is to light it, and the less energy it has. The advantage to high octane is you can squeeze it harder before it "pops."

High performance engines like to squeeze the fuel/air mix a lot, and then add spark, getting more power out of it. If it "pops"/ignites before the engine is ready, because the octane is too low, it can damage the engine, and if bad enough, put holes in your pistons.
