IMO:

911's are virtually race cars detuned for the street, while the 350z is a street car that can be uptuned for the track. What that means is that the 911 is more trackworthy out of the box than a 350z.

The air-cooled motors are even more trackworthy because of the dry oil sump. The water-cooled motors (excluding 911 Turbo, 911 GT-3, and 911 GT-2) get the short end of the stick and do not have a dry oil sump.

Porsche designs good race motors, but their mass production reliability seems inconsistent at times.

Michael.

Im sorry "maxdriverwantsZ" but you have never driven a 911 and you do not own a Z so how can you really comment?

One of the guys I work with has a 1999 911 and it honestly does not feel faster than the Z. I drove it for a whole day and can tell you for sure that it handles better and that it feels more civilized.

It just seemed to lack TQ to me. To be honest I just was not as impressed as I thought I would be. The newer 911s are faster so I may have had a different reaction to those.

The 05 should spank us in the straights and should dominate us on the autoX due to its weight/power ratio...hand built engine....and rear engine design. The 05 will also be capable of sub 5 sec. 0-60 times.

yea i guess your right but i still feel that the 911 is a better car from the interior, and from riding in it, but it should be it costs twice as much

p.s. I have driven a z

BUZZZZZZZZZZZZ, wrong.

Trust me, the reason we dip so agressively up top is NOT our fuel maps. GOD I WISH it were THAT easy.

not the fuel map at all, if that were the case we would all be running over 300 hp.

evo and gtr could take a 911 on a track though. there's a best motoring vid with 911, evo, gtr, m3, nsx. order of finish is evo, gtr, 911. i think it's an evo vii though.

Sure the 911 is going to be faster, just look at the price. All I know is we sure got a great deal for the price....plus the Z looks a lot better IMO.

IMO I do think the Z looks better than a porsche boxster and porsche carrera. But the bodykit on the Turbo and GT2 are awesome and makes it alot better than the 350Z.

One thing that I can't STAND about the Porsche Turbo is that it has those overlapping exhaust tips (aka two pipes that look like the mastercard logo) but if you look into the exhaust, the pipe is in the middle of it, the overlapping tips are just for show.

Don't tell me you are one of those people that think that just because you pay more for something it is automatically better?

It might be able to ourperform a Z, but I think the Z looks a lot better.

The 3.6L H6 in the 911 actually has just as much, if not more, low end grunt than the VQ35. From roydiculous's post, the 911 has 273lbft @ 4200rpm while the Z has 274lbft @ 4800rpm. Even if the 911s torque curve is very, very low under 3000rpms, the Porsche can launch much harder than the 350Z can due to its 40/60 f/r weight distribution and wider tires, so will not fall under that point in a race. The 911's engine is still putting out 247lbft of torque at 6800rpm while the VQ is putting out only 243lbft of torque at 6200rpm, giving the 911 a slightly broader torque curve to play with than the Z has. Couple this with the 911s lighter weight, equal gearing (maybe a little shorter), and its launch advantage and the 911 will walk a 350Z from start to finish of a race from a stop. The difference won't be vast (the 911 Carrera only runs low 13s in the 1/4 mile), but it will be enough that even an automatic 911 will have a slight advantage over a 6MT 350Z.

I didn't say anything about the pricetag, but since you did.......

Maybe it's the german engineering and the porsche name alone?

The Z is a notch away from the 911 in practically all areas, but the Z comes to us at less than half the price! Who can complain with that?!? The Z is as well balanced as the 911.

Don't tell me you're one of these insecure car owners who subconciously think that just because there are hotter cars out there that youre somehow lesser of a person?

I hope not

I'll prolly wind up getting a 2006 911 convertible.
However, until thn I stand by my belief that the Z is one helluva car. The fact that we can *even* compare a car costing more than twice (remember porsches cost way more with the custom options) really indicates the strength and VALUE of the Z.

I started a couple threads re: comparing 911 and Zs - well, my big prob was how poor the interiors of the 996 have looked. Well, it seems that porsche is returning to their roots by blessing the 997 with a killer, high quality interior. Kudos!

if you're just talking about performance you can compare lots of 30k or less cars to a 911 the same way you could a z. but the total package of styling and performance of the z is pretty much unmatched by any car except a corvette for under 50k.

dont forget Lotus...
Its the size of a match box, but I would love to see it up against the 911, or even the vette for that matter.

Must be false advertising, then. That info came from TS. I don't know you, so I can't trust you.

Assuming it is true, I still don't think it would bring us anywhere near 300rwhp if corrected.
