Default Movers are moving Z-- any advice

I just got a new job up north about 6hrs from here and the company is paying for all my moving expenses. This includes my blemishless Z and my fiancés Tiburon.

For any of you have had a car moved, can you give some advice. I’m worried (with my luck) something will happen to it. It’s going to be loaded into a covered semi. From what I understand they build a partition around it and throw all the rest of my house goods around that. I don’t even see how the hell they are going to get it ON the truck without ripping off the carbon fiber lip...not to mention it’s lowered.

Tips, Advice, Plaints of wail?

Thanks
Scott

Scott,

I was also recently transferred from Texas to Colorado, and like you my company paid to have everything packed and shipped to my new address. The moving company (United) packed my belongings onto a huge moving semi along with other peoples belongings. My truck was driven into the back of the semi and secured with wheel braces. In my opinion, the truck was not well protected and was at the mercy of any object that may be loose in the back of the semi. My truck is old was beat up pretty bad before the move, so I was not concerned with any blemishes that might be added to the vehicle. Before the moving company loaded the truck they did do a visual of all scratches / imperfections on the vehicle before shipping (this took a long time on my badly scratched truck), and I signed a document verifying these blemishes.

In my opinion, knowing how you feel about your vehicle... I would not suggest that you let anyone transport the vehicle unless that is the only item that will be moving (IE a professional vehicle transport service). If I had the Z at the time of moving I would have driven it to Colorado and made the company pay for my gas and travel expenditures.

Hope this helps; it is just my individual experience and opinion. Others may have another take on the matter.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris, sounds like good advice. I just cant drive both vehicles at the same time. The blazer will be packed with all our clothes and so forth along with our 70lb dog, and my fiance. Its a stick shift, so is the Z and she cant drive a stick. Dont know if I really have an option. Ill be dammed if one of my goofey friends will drive it up north for me.

Sounds like this is a good reason for her to learn stick shift...

Best of luck with everything regarding the move.

I moved my Z cross country, and they had to use a special enclosed truck to get the car on. Either hire a truck with a full liftgate, or one that has very long ramps and the abilty to lower its rear end.

Even in stock trim, you might scrape. As mentioned, I wouldnt trust my car with my household goods. Those trucks dont have the appropriate ramps or tie-downs to keep the car from getting scratched or scraped.

Hire a dedicated professional car moving company, and tell them you have a low car with about 4 inches of ground clearance. And absolutely dont let them touch your car until you document ever single little defect or scratch on your car. Read the fine print too...some companies wont cover "minor wear and tear" (read damage) during tranportation...that is BS....

On monday I will get the details on the truck. The relocation lady at my work said she moved a 1926 show car with that company and everything went fine. Wonder if they moved her car in a seperate truck. Yup, definately need details.

There is no way I can drive it up, so its really my only option.

They are taking the Tiburon. But I have a blazer, a dog, and everything that we will be living on for 2 months. Ill be in corporate housing with no way to access my belongings. Soooo, I have to pack everything we need in the blazer. Should be pretty damn snug.

im soon to be in this same predicament. more than likely ill be relocating from houston to florida and im worried about transporting my car.

my car has about 3" of ground clearance in the front, and i was thinking of either turning the coilovers all the way up or removing the front bumper; both of those options are sort of a hassle.

keep us updated on the move.

I worked for a company that had a reputation for moving their people every 2 years (3 guesses which company). Usually they drive the car to their local warehouse and drive the car on at a loading dock. There's definitely an element of risk. I'd worry more about the trip from your house to the warehouse. If your going 6 hours, let me guess, you're going to Raleigh. Let me make an offer: will you be driving back to atlanta? I'll drive your car up, following you, if you want, but will need a ride back to Atlanta. I'm a retiree (62), don't speed, and respect other folks property. Let me know if interested.

Leave your car, make your move, fly back and pick it up and drive it. Assuming you have a place to leave it.

Your company will probably swing for an offset on your airfare equal to the cost of shipping the car.

Unless you have a trusted person to drive it, this is the only way.

I had one shipped once and it was not pretty. A Datsun B210. They strapped it down so tight it caved in the sheet metal, not to mention the straps rubbed the paint off the fenders. You probably won't have such a bad experience, but it you do, you will definitely have a high blood pressure moment.

Also, why not load the Blazer to the gills and stuff it on the truck? Keep out just enough to live on and carry it in the Z.

Whoa, wait a minute. I just remembered. You said 6 hours from where you are now. That's what - Nashville or Cincinnati? Just take the bus and go back for it. No sweat.

rent a trailer and tow your car up there with the blazer. Then you can make sure it is loaded and protected properly.

Bob, if the company you speak of is engineering related.was it a) Yamaha b) Club Car or c) John Deere?

Regardless, I don think they want to transport it to a warehouse. Its supposed to be loaded in front of me here at the house. If anything is fishy, I will have someone drive it. Then have the company pay to fly them back. Shoot me an email.

Rony- Its Burlington NC (35min west of Raleigh)

Cluofi- I dont think the loaded down 100k mile blazer will pull my 3000lb car

I've had my car shipped all over the place (ie Boston to Kansas to Vegas to LA to ...) and I haven't had any problems. One of the biggest transport companies, DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) has special trucks just for "lowered" vehicles. You just need to allow a little more time for the shipment date. Also, it should go without saying that you really don't want to use an "open" carrier.

Here's a picture of my car just so you can compare the height.

Sounds like you have 3 options:

1) Have moving company haul it. If you can get a company that specializes (like anyone2u above suggests) in cars that appears best option to me; even if you have to foot a portion of the bill.

2) Get someone to drive it (e.g. "Bob" above) & pay for transportation back. When I bought my Z I had it delivered by the dealer 300 miles to my door. It was driven by a senior cirtizen followed by his wife in a dealer car (for return trip). Cost me $250; Z belonged to the dealer until I accepted it. No problem.

3) Fly back & drive yourself.

Wadd3456...

shoot us a PM (gq_626 or mcduck) when you get to Burlington. You're going to be about 1hr 15min north of Charlotte. We'll have to get together one weekend after you move.

Oh, and if you're here by then, there's a big Z show in Charlotte on 8/14 at Independence Nissan.

Have a safe trip!
