Got my Tamiya Model today
Anyone got advice on painting it?
I havent put a model together in about 13 years.
I actually have another one coming in the mail, so eventually I will put 2 of them together.

lightly sand the entire body first. If its a common color, get a can of (model car) spray paint. If not, invest the $10-20 on an airbrush set. ($10 if you have a shop compressor, $20 if you need one that comes with a can of compressed air). Practice on cardboard, then go for it, its really not that hard. For these 2 models, I used: Lemans - Model Masters Turn Signal Amber with a little Orange added and Chrome Silver - Model Masters Steel with a little Chrome Silver added.

I got one from HLJ too. They shipped it really quick -- it only took a few days. They give good email feedback on your order.
I did mine blue but with the carbon cloth interior (actually I did the seats grey with the tan bolsters).
My exterior paint job came out really badly orange peeled, I think because I didn't follow instructions regarding when to put on the second coat. But other than that, it's pretty nice.

I have a patient that is a master at putting together models and painting them. He wins all these competitions with his models all the time. I just got my model off of e-bay ($27.50 with shipping) and he is going to do it for me. Not sure what to give him as a reference color for Brickyard. I'll probably give him a pic of the metal pipes with the different colors on them from the Canadian car show.

Well, I started it. :)
Thanks for the tips. I bought a can of Tamiya's Mica Blue paint (and also bought a second model at Hobby People in Costa Mesa for 24 bucks!). It seems a bit too dark for Daytona Blue, but I cant really be sure of course until I see the car itself in Daytona.
Will let you know how it comes out. I have 2 models now in case the first doesnt work out, and it will also let me experiment on 2 different styles of tan leather interior.

z350z...
nice job! but is it just me...or did the paint job come out a little greenish? maybe it's the light?
i wonder why model car manufactuers haven't made a 1:18 die cast scale model of the car. usually they have desired cars such as the z (and, for example, the s2k) in model form within weeks of the release. in the case of the lamborghini murcielago, the model was available simultaneously with the launch of the car.

knihc2008: Thanks. It shouldn't look greenish -- doesn't on my monitor, anyway (or on the model!). I did perk up the brightness a bit to show the metallic look of the paint; in person it's not quite that extreme and looks darker. Unfortunately, it also has a bad case of orange peel, probably because I applied the second coat when the first was tacky (should have waited less time, or a lot more time). But overall it came out nicely and I think the color may be pretty close, but I have no way of knowing at this point. We'll see when I take delivery!

Hobbytown USA has these models for $24. I am not too good at building model cars or spend time on it. I am looking for a good die cast 350z. Any idea where can I find them?
