If you feel uncomfortable with this mish-mash of VINs, I would suggest you look for the other clues - build date after March 04, new style front tread blocks and the Tochigi (M) as the last alpha figure in the VIN (7th digit from the end). My experience has been the opposite in that most VIN's I'm seeing are "D"'s, but none are > 160001. One explanation could be stale inventory. However, I saw a "new" vehicle surface on the Nissan web site within the last few days and it, too, was way less than 160001. It's unlikely it was a dealer trade because it was nearly identical to one they already had in stock.

So, I'm stumped.

Don't know what to tell you. Guess it depends on what part of the country you're in. There are gobs of them in the DFW/N Texas area. I just had an internet offer at $1,500 off MSRP from that area and one somewhat similar from an OKC dealer.

Check out veilside Z's post on the current thread titled "Where are 350 Z's built???? His diagram seems to pretty well answer the question of what the VIN digits represent. Of course, the Tochigi plant is now operative.

Final analysis - Looks like "M" designation is a sure fire 2004.5.

Build date 3/'04 for my roadster; 5100 mi.; and no feathering. Tire wear on OEMs is even, but at the current rate ("spirited" driving on mostly winding highways), I'm gonna do well to get 11k before all 4 tires are bald across the board. About 1/2 my tread depth is gone already.

Probably, if it's a coupe with a VIN of D*4T160001 or E*4T060001 or higher, it's a 2004.5.
