Default downshifting from 6th to 3th??

Guys,

Today I was driving and getting ready to exit the freeway. My car was slowing to 60mph (rolling) in 6th gear. I just wanted to see if I can downshift to 3. I could not get it into gear the first 2 times. Seem like it was lock for safety a reason. Third time was fine, the rpm shot to 4.5 k .

Is 60 too much to downshift to 3 gear?

it's all good as long as you don't hit the redline, one time i was being stupid and i downshifted to 3rd turned around to clear for cars as i was getting off the exit next thing i know the engine cut off i went way over the redline i immediatly started apoligizing to her.So the next day i ordered her a brand new rear badge he he

some guys will heel+toe or you can just tap the gas to bring up the rev then release clutch. just throwing her into 3rd is kinda harsh.

60 is fine, but make sure you rev match.

I downshifted @ ~80ish once which got me within like 500rpm or so from the redline........ouch......& I appologized too, hhehehehe

As long as you rev-match, you'll be alright. The closer you get to the RPM in 3rd, the less your clutch will have to work. But the shift is fine, 2nd is even OK, because at 60, you still have about 800rpm left until redline or so.

Just work on your rev matching by practicing easier shifts, for example from 6th to 5th... etc.

I don't want to hijack the thread but I was wondering if you guys can downshift from 2 to 1 without grinding? I used to have an old Celica and there was no way to downshit to the first gear without hearing this horrible noise. Does the Z tranny allow that?

I do it every day - at least once - when I approach my drive tot he carport - there is a dip, then a small incline - which I approach at an angle and very slow to avoid "bottoming". I almost stop, shift from 2nd to 1st - no problem! - no grinding!

Yes, if you rev match it and downshift at the proper speed. (slower than 35mph, where the 1st gear covers) I don't do this often but when I want to show off my Borla Exhaust sound a little, I downshift from 4th to 3rd, an then quickly to 2nd, and then finally to 1st before it comes to complete stop. As long as you do it right, it won't hurt the transmission.

BTW Jason, that video is sick! Can you say ZOOOM~? Seems like the driver power shifted from 3rd to 4th. Am I right?
Now only if those Tiltons were streetable.. ( I know streetable versions are out, but 300rwhp capacity is a little too low, just in case I want to go FI later.)

It's your synchros:

For me, if I'm above 15mph, I can't put it into 1st without resistance.

60 for 2nd.

When I'm cruising down the highway at 60mph, I'll double clutch and downshift into 3 to smoothly go from 60-88... so sweet.

I've never had the syncros not let me get into 3rd gear.

You are 100% positive you were trying to get into 3rd? I've shifted really fast from 6th to 3rd and caught 1st by accident, good thing the syncro would NEVER let you 1st when you are going that fast.

I get a grind every time i downshift from 6th to 3rd at 60MPH. I dont rev-match though.....just straight downshifting. Seems like the tranny should be able to handle this.

Guys,

The term "rev matchin" means to match your rpm with the correct speed/gear?

AV630 - do you mean to give it some gas so the rpm gets up to the correct level while the car is in "neutral" (sort like neutral) and then shift to 3 ?

Thanks,
Tony

Default 3rd gear nightmare

Lucky me.. I had a similar problem that started occuring while driving in to work yesterday morning. Whenever I upshifted or downshifted into 3rd, it made a grinding noise. Over lunch, I went to the nearest dealership to have them check it out. They informed me that the synchros went bad, and they ordered a new tranny for me. I have a 2003 Z with 7k miles. Nightmare!

Doesn't matter how strong the tranny is. Rev-matching is the most efficient practice for a smooth transition. If you're going slow enough (like during city driving), you don't need to rev match. Say you're going 35 in 5th, you can get away with downshifting to 4th without making the car buck. But most of us downshift to obtain a significant increase in power. For example, downshifting from 5th to 2nd at 50 mph. The tranny will buck if you don't rev match. The fact that the tranny might be able to handle not rev-matching is irrelevant. Rev-matching is the right way of doing things.

I've never downshifted from 5th to 2nd at 50mph. I don't think my driving skill is good enough that:

1. Rev-match Shift 5->2 @50mph
2. Accl in 2nd until 62mph
3. Shift 2->3 @62mph
3. Accl in 3rd until 70mph

I feel like if I wanted to go from 50mph to 70mph fastest, I'd rev-match downshift to 3rd and go WOT - I don't think I can shift fast enough, especially with only 13mph to the redline in 2nd gear.

Time to get better at stick!

I've downshifted into 3rd under similar conditions and I just found that I needed more power. Even if it was only long enough to gain 13 mph in 2nd.

I'm always at WOT any time I'm looking for power.
