Question My replacement Z - NAV OPTION

As many of you know my car was totaled in an accident that was not my fault on Monday.

I have two Options at this point:

1) Take a car coming in two weeks with all my options except NAV and have an aftermarket NAV installed.
Note: I have priced an aftermarket Alpine NAV system and it looks to cost about $3,000 installed and I will probably only be able to get $2,000 from the insurance company.

2) Re-order my car and have all my options but not receive the car for three months.

Some questions:

Pre-Orders who purchased NAV would you buy the Nissan NAV again or would you go with an aftermarket NAV?
Any reasons either way would be appreciated.
Note: Nissan advertised a touch screen NAV system that they did not deliver.

Which car do you think will be worth more money down the line?

Thanks for any replies....

Jeremy

Default Go Aftermarket

Go with the Pioneer AVIC 90 and the Alpine Screen.
Nazar hooks it up for around $1880.
Then you just cover install (around $400)

Best,

Default I have a Nav

But.. If I was able to afford a touch screen nav with other bennies in with it too.. I would do that.... BUT

I like the nav that is in the car now...

If I had to order a car again.. I would still order it.

Go for the one coming in now.

Since your old Z had the NAV...you'd probably be the best person to answer this question

WHY NAV?

It just gives Big Brother a way to track you if they so desire.

I LOVE THIS FREAKIN CAR!

I don't know yet, but I ordered the NAV option and will finally find out next week. I would think that the factory installed system would be better for resale though. And maybe installed cleaner too.

So the one you can get right away is also Lemans Sunset?

Alphine has an 8 inch touch screen that won't fit. I was just refering to my orginal expectation that the car would have touch screen.

From Nissan's web site (notice the touch screen reference):

" DVD Navigation System
The Nissan Navigation System (NAVI) uses data received from Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, as well as its own internal guidance system, to precisely pinpoint the location and velocity of the vehicle. Using a touch-screen display mounted in the center of the instrument panel, the driver inputs a desired destination and NAVI can direct the driver to any business or residential address within its area of coverage through clear, easy-to-follow and visual instructions. The Point-of-Interest database can find places such as ATMs, gas stations, restaurants, or hospitals. The three-dimensional Birdview screen displays a view from above, looking down on the vehicle like a bird in flight.

This is a factory-installed option. Never program while driving. Requires accurate GPS service to be available and operating for features to function properly. Mapping may not be detailed in all areas. Some Nissan dealers may not appear on the current mapping system. Periodic updates to the DVD will be available at additional cost. See your Nissan dealer for details. BirdView is a trademark of Xanavi Corporation. "

I have talked with the dealer who is helping me get a replacement car and he said Nissan is taking some flack for the NAV because of the lack of touch-screen, the buttons are not angled to the driver and the door over the NAV.

I just thought I would point out these issues when people are trying to respond to the poll I posted.

Yeah it has everything except NAV. (see sig) The car is being routed to my dealer as a special case. The car had no owner and was being held in a pool of cars by Nissan for dealers to swap cars in special cases. Example. Car was damaged in delivery so the dealer could contact Nissan for a replacement right away.

I personally like the Nav. system in my car and I actually prefer the toggle switch over a touch screen. My cousin has a Lexus SC430 with a touch screen and unless you clean after every use it looks like a mess.

The Nissan Nav. system is user-friendly and, of course, fits perfectly. I always have concerns with aftermarket systems not fitting properly and not looking right after installation.

I can't, however, say that you should wait 3 months. Only you can make that call but if it was me I would wait. Then again I don't use my car for daily driving so who am I to say.

Whatever choice you make I'm sure will be the right one for you as you are planning everything out beforehand.

Good luck and look forward to seeing your new car pics. soon.

The point about finderprints on the screen is right on point.

I had the same dilema... I could get a 350z without the Nav last week, or I could get one with it in a few months. I opted for NOW. However, the aftermarket systems are significantly higher than the $1999 from Nissan. Nazer's Alpine approach is an exception. Pioneer systems have been recommended to me over the Alpine by 3 different installers, but it is $3200

Jeremy:

This doesn't answer your question, but my preference would be to omit the Nav system.

It gets you a car sooner, and saves a buck or two.

Did some research today and this might be a good option. I do want to be able to play movies in the car.

Question who or what is a Nazar?

Lemans350Z, i'd definately go with an aftermarket nav. I thought the stock nav would be great, but if I could do it again i'd go aftermarket. The option to get DVD inputs along with TV and other stuff more than makes up for the slightly higher price...

Default Aftermarket NAV.

I certainly echo the general sentiment of this particular thread. I, by and large, have been dissappointed with the Navigation unit in the Nissan, having previously used the very user-friendly navigation system in the Acura (DVD-based version). To those who have used touchscreen, it is hard to migrate to a joystick based unit.

I was persuaded to purchase the Nissan Nav unit since my understanding was (1) its touchscreen; and (2) there are particularly "unique" features wherein the car's ECU is tied into the Nav.

That being said, I think moving to an aftermarket Nav, equipped by a true expert, will offer you touchscreen, a larger screen, and the ability to play DVD movies without any additional modifications to the OEM unit.

Good luck with the new car, and most importantly, Im glad that youre safe and well after your recent experience.

One thing I'm fairly certain about is that resale will be sig. higher w/ the factory NAV, since aftermarket mods do little if anything for resale.

The real question is whether you really NEED nav or are just infatuated w/ an expensive toy. I've seen it, and think it's cool, but I know my way around Austin and the Hill Country. I may need a map when I go out of town, but that's not often enough to rationalize the NAV...and even then, I'm more likely to take the Tundra.

Everyone NEEDS nav if they live in a large city. If you don't, and don't travel out of your town/area often, then you don't need it. Also, resale is horrible for a nav... An appraiser at my local Lexus dealership told me that the nav option suffers the biggest hit in terms of resale.
