wow...even the Z forums has a thread going on for the new entry level sports coupe from nissan
ive been on this topic over on zilvia for close to the past year...there are 2 members and i who spend A LOT of our free time scouring the internet looking for new info on the new entry level coupe...so lemme help everyone out here with Q & A
1) There are tons of rumors saying Nissan is bringing the Silvia back out in 2010...is there any truth in this???
While i cant give you a 100% confirmation that it will be a silvia, Nissan is planning to have a new RWD, 4 Cyl, TURBO sports coupe back on the market by the end of 2010.
This new RWD Coupe might revive the name "Silvia" and it might not. Going from Nissans heritage, this car may actually receive the name "200sx" or "180sx" due to engine sizes. More on this in a bit.
2) What motor is Nissan planning on using in the "Silvia"??? Wouldnt the QR25de be a great turbo engine to put in the new rwd coupe?
Again, more rumors have been floating around about the new engine being used. Sources have laid claim that Nissan is planning on using a 1.6 litre or 1.8 litre turbo motor. However, looking at Nissans current line up of motors (that are used all over the world, including in Renaults cars), the MR18de/MR20de may be a good choice to receive a turbo. Also, the HR16de may be a possible choice (if the displacement is increased). The MR and HR engines are considdered "world motors" due to their availability all over the world.
The QR series engine will more than likely NOT be used for the simple fact the only market it is built for and produced in is the US market. The QR is a horrible motor as far as performance is concerned. Nissan has already begun to phase this motor out of the picture (and is replacing it with the MR series engines). The QR has been plagued with defects and MAJOR design flaws. there have been numerous warranty issues that involve the replacement of this motor in their vehicles they are used in.
3) Isnt Nissan planning on releasing the car with an "Infiniti" badge instead of a "Nissan" badge???
A few sources claim to have confirmed that the new "200sx" or "Silvia" platform will also wear an "Infiniti" badge.
Due to pressure and competition coming from the BMW 1 series, Nissan wants to get in on the entry level LUXURY coupe market ASAP. So with the introduction of the new "Silvia" to the market, it would only be smart for Nissan to add a small displacement V6 (with comparable horsepower to the 1 series), upgrade the interior a bit, add some "smoother" curves to the outside of the car, and badge it the new Infiniti entry model.
No one is quite sure yet what the actual name of the car will be, but there is good speculation that it will share the G badge and more than likely carry the number 25 after the letter. (So a G25 Coupe)
4) What platform is the new "200sx" or "Silvia" being built on??? What will they look like???
The new "Silvia" platform is being based on a heavily modified FM chassis (the 350z/370z/G35/G37/GTR). The exact details are sketchy, however, im going to take an EDUCATED shot in the dark and say that the new chassis will weigh roughly 300-400lbs less than the current Z/G, share a shorter wheel base (but keep its wide stance), and both the infiniti and nissan will have back seats (so this wont be a strict 2 seater like the Z family).
From the teaser photos ive seen (NOT PHOTOSHOPPED IMAGES!!! THERE ARE REAL IMAGES OF THE CAR BEING TEASED FLOATING AROUND) and the past concept cars Nissan has shown (especially the Urge that was shown above), the cars will resemble their bigger sisters. The new "Silvia" will quite heavily share its bodily features with the 350/370z, and the Infiniti 1 series fighter will resemble the new G37 a bit. Given both cars are being built on the FM platform, of course they will resemble the original big sisters.
05) Why has it taken so long to be re-introduced to the market (especially with drifting being so popular?)
Lets take a trip back to the late 90s/early 2000's. Nissan was facing bankruptcy (big time). I dont remember the exact details of how this happend, but 42% of Nissans shares were bought by Renault. Carlos Ghosn took control of both companies and did a MARVELOUS job at digging Nissan out of it hole and turned it into a MAJORLY successful company (almost over night...hes praised world wide for his actions and business strategies with Nissan).
One of the things Carlos Ghosn did was eliminate alot of the hartiage models that werent making Nissan alot of money (this was VERY important). Unfortunately, one of those models was the Nissan Silvia (and the GTR, but thats a different story). Though the Silvia had been around for over 45 years, it just wasnt Nissan bread and butter in any market. The focus was switched the Z (given it was the heritgage model WORLD wide). Ghosn had the sports car focus shifted to the Z and work began on revamping the car for a WORLD market.
The new 350Z was reintroduced into the market, and people went nuts for it. Not too long after the new Z came along. the new Skyline Coupe (the G35) was introduced world wide as well. The G35 Sports Coupe proved to be Infinitis biggest selling car year after year after year.
Nissan had a foot hold on the market so attention was turned away from the Z/G35 and put COMPLETELY on the GTR. The GTR was finished in mid 2007. It appeared at the Tokyo Auto Show and 2007 was the year of the GTR. 2008 will be the year of the new 370z, and what about 2009??? and what about the new "Silvia" or "200sx"???
Well, guess what, thankfully, due to the major breakthru success of the 350z/G35/G37, the market being reintroduced to ENTRY level sport coupes (ie: the BMW 1 series, the Sky/Solstice), and the sheer DEMAND for the Silvia again, Nissan has listened.
Nissan began testing a small, RWD platform in early 2007. This platform has never been shown testing on tracks simply due to the knowledge gained from the Z and the GTR over the last 8 years with the FM platform. The FM platform has very little modification required to make the car slightly smaller, lighter weight and peppy with a 4 cyl turbo motor. Carlos Ghosn has announced SEVERAL times in the past that the Silvia is not forgotten. To quote him directly from a press conference in 2004 regarding the 350z drop top, Ghosn was addressed about the future of the Silvia and he had this to say "It is a good time to be a Nissan fan. Keep your eyes and ears open around the time of the GTR launch in 2008/2009. You will find a pleasant surprise".
6) What will the new "Silvia" and "1 Series Fighter" cost???
With the Z being upgraded to the 370z in 2009, Nissan is said to be upping the price of the car between $5,000-$9,000. That puts any ideas the entry level sports car people have out the window. Dont fret, Nissan has a plan for those of us who cant afford 400-500 bux a month in car payments.
The new "200sx"/"Silvia" is said to be price VERY low for what youre going to get. Nissan is throwing around the price numbers of $20,000 base to $25,000 fully loaded. The pricing will be in DIRECT competition to the new 2011 Toyota/Subaru entry level RWD coupe coming onto the market.
The new "1-Series" fighter will be priced in direct competition with the BMW 1 Series. Nissan really hasnt mentioned anything about pricing on this car, but look for STARTING prices of about $28,000 base to $32,000 fully loaded.
7) Why hasnt Nissan said anything official about the new "Silvia" in the past???
From 2000 on, Nissan's focus was not on performance, it was on getting its *** out of financial trouble. Carlos Ghosn did exactly that. But to do that, he had to remove cars that were not financially profitable for the company. He also had to change the Nissan image completely.
The 350Z was a good chunk of Nissans revamp. The GTR was very hush hush, and the Silvia was merely a fun idea to throw around.
Nissans main focus for the last 7 years (since the GTR Concept introduced in 2001) has been, flat out, the GTR. The 350z was more of a testing ground car that became a complete success. However, the big attention grabber that Nissan has had for years in its home country had to work in EVERY market it was introduced in. So as far as sports cars were concerned for the last 7 years, if it didnt have to do with the GTR, it didnt matter a whole lot. Thats not to say that the FM platform isnt a marvelous car Nissan has built. But for Nissan to spend its time on 2 ENTRY level coupes for the world market, it was going to lose money doing that.
But now, the times have changed. Because the GTR is now on the market, Nissan is able to shift its efforts away from the GTR and now focus on 1) Making the 370z an even more amazing car than the 350z and 2) Give the ENTRY level people a car that can EASILY and AFFORDABLY incorporate the last 10 years worth of technology that can easily be offered.
So to answer the above question, the reason you havent heard or seen almost anything on the new "Silvia" is because Nissan has basically been too busy working on the new GTR (and rightly so). But dont worry, i will bet you within the next 6-9 months, not only will you hear and official announcement from Nissan regarding the new car, you will actually get to SEE the car

mind you...there has been no OFFICIAL confirmation about either car yet...only rumors (especially from people who attend nissan press conferences)...HOWEVER...my guess is we will hear ALOT more about the new sports coupes later this year at the tokyo or LA auto shows...and will more than likely SEE the cars at the detroit auto show in january (crosses fingers)
the timeline is coming down to the wire for the 2 new coupes...and for nissan not to officially announce AND show the cars within the next 6-9 months is going to majorly hurt their market presence...especially with the Genesis Coupe already finished, and Toyota already testing their new sports coupe on the suzuka circuit (i believe it was suzuka) and having it photographed by spy photographers
one major point i forgot to add to the above list of information...it would be VERY unprofitable for nissan to produce the new coupe for only ONE brand...the new coupe chassis has to be shared between both nissan and infiniti for it to be profitable in all markets (given nissan has released the infiniti brand in europe and japan...and i BELIEVE they are readying it for china)

Nissan is smart and they arent about to get beat out of the re-emerging entry level coupe market...especially by toyota (its biggest competitor)
