The dealership called me and said they think it's the "Latches" that are malfunctioning so they have ordered some new ones and are going to install them as soon as they come in (Mon. or Tues.) I'll let you know the end result.

that sounds wierd to me. If the clicking sound is coming from the door pannels why would the latches be malfunctioning? JM1521, your getting more responce from your car than i am. All i get is the windows to go down. My seats don't move or anything after that. If only i had some time to actually take my car to the garage. Hope they fix yours sooon!

Ok.. its been in the shop for 13 days and they still cant figure it out. Here is how professional this place is... "We got the part in yesterday but we cant figure out how it goes on." Yes, that is a direct quote on my message. According to the dealership, nissan is sending out a specialist to come take a look at it which wont be for a few more days. I took a picture of all my guages when I dropped it off... All I'm saying is if that odomoter has more than 5 miles more that what the picture says, I'm getting a lawyer. C'mon, 13 days on a convertible top? Its not like its an engine swap or a re-wire job... it's a convertible top...

when i checked at the local nissan dealership here they said "we have 4 convertible Z's in here now w/top problems and we can't figure out what it is and they have been here for over 2 weeks already." Thats why i was going to take mine to the next town over. i'm waiting to take mine until yours gets fixed so i can tell them what to look at. Sorry you keep getting the run a round. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

i'm in TN visiting my family and the Nissan dealership here seems to think they can fix my car in 1 day as long as they don't need to order any parts. Hopefully they are right. We'll see....

i now have a working top!! took the TN dealership to fix in 1 hour. it was a "passanger cancel switch" inside the door pannel. the mechanic said its probably from where i left my windows down on the car in my garage for weeks at a time without moving it or anything. I'm glad i finally found a decent dealership with some grade A mechanics.

My 2004 developed exactly the same symptoms as Swifty's. It's been at the dealer for a week and and a half now, and they still can't find the problem! At first they said it was a bad switch (I don't know which one) - they ordered and installed a new one. They then said it worked for a few seconds with the new switch, but failed again! Now they don't know what to do. I gave the service mgr a copy of this thread, but that didn't seem to help. Seems like a number of people have had this problem. Anybody have any further insight?

Thanks,
John

Sorry to hear about your top problems...

When you have to leave your car at the dealer for days (or weeks) at a time, do they provide a rental? Or are you either without a car, or paying for your own rental?

Yes, they gave me loaner, which amazed me since the car is no longer under warranty and I didn't buy it from them.

They called today to say they found a bad controller and have to replace it. Total cost will be $1,300, which include 2 hours of diagnostics ($190), plus the part, installation labor and tax. Time to trade it in for a 2008 bmw 335i convertible, which I already ordered!!

Had / having similar problems. Top initially would not begin retract (open) sequence after windows opened and pax seat moved forward, I heard latches clicking in back but no top movement. This left yellow top not closed light on on console. Took to dealer and they pushed rear portion of top down relatching and all was well for a short time. I told them that was the effect of problem, not the cause, but could not duplicate further.

30 plus days later more top trouble. Failed mid opening sequence with hard cover open and soft top pointing straight up in the air. Manually stowed soft top and this allowed sequencing to hard cover to close over top so I could at least drive it. Several failed top operations later took to another dealer who is now trouble shooting.

Learned that top for this car has 4 motors - a left and a right for soft top, one for hard shell and one for the 5th bar - the rear portion of the soft top that opens first prior to hard shell. They feel this 5th bar motor is my problem.

I've passed along all the useful info I've just learned here and will advise final outcome.

Sure seems like alot of people are having similar problems yet Nissan acts as if it is news to them.

Good Luck at the stealership.Take some lubricant and practice on bending over cause there going to give it good to you.If your lucky they will use your lubricant. But seriously sorry to hear about the problem you have it might be a short in the motor that controls the top or maybe the switch.

Thanks, they tell me there are 12 switches in the system, in addition to relays and of course sequencing issues. In my case they say they are getting power (12 volts) to the 5th bar motor but it is not operating, so that is their likely suspect. Probablly won't know till later next week as they needed to order motor and maybe the entire "assembly" that goes with it.

I'm having the exact same problem as you skyhiguy - my roof issues didn't start until this past Saturday but mine are exactly as you described:
The windows go down, the passenger seat moves forward, and then nothing - you hear the sound of motors attempting to work behind you but nothing happens. Meanwhile... the yellow convertible light is now lit every time I start and drive the car - even though the roof is fully closed. It's almost as if the closing sequence won't complete either now...

My Z is a 2004 with 48.5K miles on it so it's out of the original warranty period - however, I have a 100K Nissan Security+Plus Gold Preferred warranty, so everything should be covered for me. However, I'm thinking that if a lot of roadster owners are having (or will have) this problem, then Nissan may have to extend the warranty for everyone regarding this issue - or face a class action suit.

My dealers current idea of a solution is to outsource the repair to a company called Pan-Am who specializes in convertible top repairs and if it's a covered part that is malfunctioning then the whole repair would be covered. The only caveat is that if its not an obvious motor problem or repairable part - they are saying I would have to pay their inspection fee - which is crap. It's not my fault the roof stopped working...

Either way, I'm still planning on calling NNA about it - and if they aren't responsive - a friend of mine here in SD works for a large law firm that specializes in class action suits.

I'll keep you all posted.

Please do keep us posted. I firmly believe that the top problems are just as bad as the tire feathering issues of the '03 & '04's. Nissan won't admit it!!!!
