Default "storage protector" clear film on tonneau cover

Hi everyone.

So I needed to get my tonneau repainted and before I did I took off that clear film that protects the paint on the tonneau cover.

My question is will it be alright if I do not reapply a new one once after the top has been repainted.

Nissan charges $90 for that protective film and installation is another $100

I cannot justify paying that much just for a clear sticker looking thing.

The top has some of that black weather strip at the bottoom of it where it meets the tonneau when it is put up. Shouldnt that be all the protection I would need for the paint.

anyone take that protective film off???

let me know about your thougths and experience.

thanks

I recommend you keep it. You can save a few bucks by buying clear bra material but you'd never cut a clear arc. So buy the Nissan part. As for installation, do it yourself. You did the hard part of removing the old one.

Mine got real dirty and looked like s*it, so I took it off and never replaced it, it's been over a year and my paint is fine and it has never leaked. So you will be fine leave it off. I had also talked to a couple Nissan techs and they said it really is not needed, alot of thier customers have taken it off after it got dirty.

Yea I think I might keep it off. I doubt it will affect my paint. I will call a few Nissan dealers tomorrow and see what they think. I hope a few more people can chime in who have taken theirs off.

Thanks guys

I called about 15 dealers and all but one said I should replace the protective film with a new one. They said since Nissan has such thin crappy paint/clear that it would eventually start eating away at the clear.

hmmm..... Im stuck in between now. what should I do?

applying it myself looks like a difficult task I dont think I can undertake.

Smartest thing to do is spend the $190 and get it done. I know I would.
