Default Top lid opening problem

Good afternoon, having an issue on my top lid opening. When opening the lid it will most of the times open a few inches then stop. Hit the button again a few inches again again sometimes 5/6 times to fully open. Once the top is in the compartment ususally no problem opening the lid and top closing up. Any clue if there is some kind of switch causing this as it’s only on opening and not closing?

I've got that exact same problem with my 2004 roadster top. Haven't been able to figure out what the heck is the problem. Goes back up every time perfectly, but that darned lid problem is driving me crazy.

The elastic on your top fold bar is worn, and not retracting it and letting it pinch.

It should be just above your head in the driver seat but behind you a few inches. It's a small thin bar that goes across. While the top goes down push the bar down backwards and the fabric behind it out to make sure the fabric doesn't stop it from closing. Should fix your problem.

TLDR; Basically there's is a small thin bar behind your head above you, push it back while the top opens if that first sentence is confusing.

Thanks for the reply CK. Only problem is my top is brand new. The straps are new too so it's something else.

My problem is like the OP. I push the button, the 5th bow brings the back of the top up and then the lid starts to open a few inches and stops. I keep pushing the open button and the top moves a few more inches. Finally after 5 or 6 pushes the rest of the sequence completes dropping the top into its compartment.

Closing the top always works, the lid comes right up. It's a strange problem.

Also, after a few tries of this the top opens up normally for the rest of the day. But if the car sits overnight, the same ugly problem reappears.

Oh I thought you meant you were having issues closing the lid after you tried to put it away.

How is your volts? If it's cold these tops don't work. Even new from the factory Nissan has a statement that said if cold or damp seasons the top may not function. Which isn't that big of an issue due to no one wanting to go top down in 40° weather.

I would say the brake switch but it wouldn't effect it all the time.

That's some good advise. I wasn't aware of the cold causing problems. I guess if it messes up when the weather warms I've got other problems.

Thanks for the lube on the hinges, I haven't messed with those. I do know that when the lid hangs it puts a heck of a load on the electrical system, so maybe it's the hinges.

As for those switches in the trunk, they don't seem very easy to get to without tearing up the trunk liner.

If you do lube then. Be sure to use a quality machine grease.

If you use a light water or thin based lube expect to lube it as often as your oil changes. These come from the factory with a small amount of machine grease.

I have just posted a request for the help with the same problem. Have you had any more luck getting it to work? Mine hangs up most of the time, but not every time... sometimes it's perfect .. so frustrating!

Thanks!

Nope, still hangs up. Though I have noticed it's a bit less in the warmer weather. At least it hangs putting the top down rather than the other way.
