Question Twin Turbo or S/C with A/T???

May have been covered previously in the board, but I have a 04 ZR touring with A/T. I wanted to add either the Greddy TT or one of the various superchargers out there in the world now for the Z. I have a budget of 17,000 for everything, to include rims, tires, brakes, suspension, body and engine work. Everyone who has the turbo or s/c kit done has the manual tranny. Im planning on having it tuned to produce about 375 hp to the wheels. Should i think about a tranny upgrade and a rear axle upgrade before i do this work to the car, cuz im alittle scared that adding that much power would be detrimental. Which would be better in the long run with maintence costs the TT or S/C. Im kinda new to the tuning thing...and i need a shop who would be willing to work on the car with the parts i provide. As it stands now these are the parts i plan on purchasing:

Greddy TT kit with intercooler
Greddy oil catch
Nismo CAI
Nismo Cams
Nismo Headers
Nismo Cat Back Exhaust
AP Big Brake kit
Tein SS coilovers
Nismo Sway Bars
Volk Gt-C 19's W Toyo tires
body kit to be determined

There will definitly be some other parts in there...i made a list and have it at home. As for the over-abundance of NISMO parts, i work for Nissan and get them for cost

If you guys wanna make suggestions feel free, I have only purchased the Wheels and Tires so far. Thanks for the help.

I'll be honest - if you bought the car with an auto and you planned on adding onto it you made a mistake IMHO because an auto tranny isn't always suitable for modding...you have another computer to contend with, and you don't have that shifting control over your car...best of luck but if I were you I'd either replace the auto with a manual or trade in for a manual...

Well, first off, if you go with the Greddy TT, you'll have no use for the Nismo CAI or the Nismo headers, and the stock exhaust will be fine. At the power level you're talking about, the stock cams will be fine too, but you'll really want forged internals since the stock rods and pistons are proving troublesome in forced induction cars. There's currently a group buy going on for Pauter rods and Arias pistons. You might want to get in on it.

Contrary to what you said, there are AT cars with FI on this board. Look around a bit more before saying that's not an option. The AT in the Z is pretty stout, so it can handle the power. You might want a high stall torque converter, a Stillen valve body kit, and almost certainly a transmission cooler. Technosquare has the appropriate reflash for this.

Thanks for the reply, I understand not having the CAI but why not the headers? Like i said i am kinda new to this and have been reading up as much as possible, but im sure i have missed some of the basics. And you recommended the stock exhaust...would i be correct in assuming that a high flow cat back exhaust would reduce the turbo back pressure thus really negating some of the horsepower? As i go through and read alot of this stuff its pretty cool to understand more and more. thanks for the input.

i think there's no use in getting aftermarket headers because the greddy tt kit comes with it.

Turbo kits come with their own exhaust manifolds. That's where the turbos mount. The stock catback flows enough to exhaust the turbos just fine, switching to aftermarket would just make more noise. You will want high flow cats, or if you live where emissions tests aren't required, you can use test pipes.

I live in NY so i could use test pipes until i need to have the car inspected...then i would have to switch them back and take my chances. If i wanted to have the turbos shoot off the excess air out the sides of the car like the EVO in Fast and the Furious two...what is involved in that...i think that would look sick. You all will probably laugh but Im trying to just make my car alittle different from whats out there. And I was looking at the Tein ss coilovers...could i get away with using something thats alittle cheaper and still have similar handling...thats the only thing bothering me right now..spending 1700 on the coilovers alone. I really like the idea of the height converter in the vehicle though, so i would def go for that. Im spending alot of money and its making me dizzy...im going back to work

Let me slow you down before you get too carried away. The 'air' that you see shooting out of the side of the Evo's hood is really the driver purging the nitrous system.

You could save yourself $1000 by getting the Tein Basic coilovers. They have the same functionality, and are also adjustable.

Although I would not want an automatic car, with a torque converter, tranny reprogramming, and your F/I, you will meet/beat the times of 6mt drivers with F/I. Just take a look at all of the F-Body's and Vette's. Even the last Supra- the auto's were faster than the manuals in the quarter mile.

As others have replied, the turbo system will come complete with an exhaust manifold so instead of getting the headers, I suggest you contribute to the VodkaRocket down-payment fund!

Good luck with your modding, I am sure the finished product will be impressive to say the least.

thanks for the feed back. Since I posted last I greatly adjusted the products I am going to install, especially after doing some research and learning how everything works. Instead of the Greddy TT, I am going to go with the Power Enterprise TT. It seems to come with alittle more equipment and has had better ratings from users. I read up alot on the differences between the Tein SS kit and Basic, and have decided to go with the Basic as you suggested. Just seemed like alot of money for something I would probably never adjust. INstead of the Nismo cams...im going to go with the Pauter forged rods and Ariua Piston Kit for 1700 bucks. From talking to people on here, it seems like a better way to go over the cams. AP Big brake kit is out, I did some more research and found the Stoptech 332mm front brake kit will do me just fine and I saved some money, but I might get the GREX polished kit only because it looks SICK. The catback exhaust was scrapped, now I going with the Invidia kit, I heard a sound clip from both and loved the way the Invidia sounded with FI. POP charger instead of the Nismo CAI and no more headers. I saved myself roughly 3 grand by doing some research and finding out what I really needed and what was for show. Hopefully this works. And I found a shop near my house... Performance Motorsports in Westbury to do my work. As it comes together Ill post pictures and let you guys know. Where can I find torque converter?

Z-Pimp, you wont need the POP charger cuz the TT comes with a air filter so you just saved yourself another 100$

This is an ignorant statement based on false assumptions.

Check out Edge for the TC.

Also look into the Stillen Valve Body upgrade....I am having this installed tomorrow so I will let you know the difference. I am doing this first, then the TC.

Good Luck.

Hello jwkirkland!

Did you like the valve body from stillen?

I have plan to F/I APS my 2004 ZR, Looks like I need a Valve body upgrade if I go with a F/I 5at.

THX!
