Nissan Press Conference 2004 SEMA Show [Nov. 2, 04]

Jack Collins
Vice President, Product Planning
Nissan North America, Inc.

Good afternoon. Thirty-five years ago, on October 18, 1969, the 240Z officially went on sale in North America.

It had a 150-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-6, a 4-speed manual or optional 3-speed automatic and a MSRP of $3,526.

At its unveiling, the “Father of the Z” Mr. Katayama said of the then radical new sports car: “The 240Z represents the imaginative spirit of Nissan and was designed to please a demanding taste that is strictly American. Nissan offers this spirited car with affection. Its heart is Japan and its soul is America.”

Thirty-five years later, I’m pleased to report that the Z’s heart and soul, as well as its legacy, remain firmly intact in this exciting new 2005 35th Anniversary 350Z…

Let me give you just a few quick highlights of the 35th Anniversary model, starting with its powertrain:

- Horsepower, when equipped with the manual transmission, is 300 – exactly double that of the original Z
- Torque is 260 lb-ft, versus 148 on the 240Z
- The engine is the new higher performance version of the standard 350Z VQ engine
- Modifications made to achieve 300 horsepower include:
- strengthened connecting rods and bolts
- double-mass crank pulley
- revised shape of the piston head
- new camshaft profile, remapped ECM and more

- This higher performance engine tuning will also be available with the 2005 350Z Track model
- The 35th Anniversary model is also available with a 5-speed automatic transmission and 287 horsepower-spec engine

Also, clutch pedal effort has been reduced for manual transmission equipped Z models… and 5-speed automatic equipped Zs feature a new Downshift Rev Matching system, which essentially “blips” the throttle between gears and before the trans downshifts in manual model.

It’s like double-clutching without the clutch. And, it provides about 40% faster downshifts compared to the current transmission in Manual mode. Both features are available on all 2005 Z models.

Those are the enhancements to the 35th Anniversary Z that you feel but don’t see. The other, more obvious, changes include:

· Special 18-inch cast aluminum-alloy wheels
· Front and rear spoilers
· Brembo brakes
· Heated leather seats
· Bose® audio system
· and special 35th Anniversary Z badging

The 35th Anniversary Z is offered in just three colors
- the new Ultra Yellow, Super Black and Silverstone.

The 35th Anniversary Z will be available in early 2005. I’m pleased to be able to announce the 35th Anniversary pricing this afternoon - $36,100 for the 6-speed manual and $37,100 for the 5-speed automatic transmission model. That’s an incredible car at an incredible value, just like the original was 35 years ago.

The 35th Anniversary Z is one of five new models we’re introducing for 2005, part of Nissan’s ongoing new product development program.

With the addition of new, high value Altima SE-R, we’re bringing affordable performance to a wider audience. In other words, just because your vehicle needs may have grown, you don’t have to leave your love of performance behind.

And, along with expanding our SE-R franchise, we’re introducing our first-ever NISMO-branded model, the 2005 NISMO Frontier.

It draws on Nissan’s extensive Motorsports and off-road racing history, including our current CORR effort, as well as Paris – Dakar.

The NISMO Frontier was developed in conjunction with engineers from NISMO, Nissan’s Motorsports group, which is known by enthusiasts worldwide for the coolest Nissan appearance accessories and hottest Nissan performance parts.

The NISMO Frontier features an extensive list of high performance parts, including:
- NISMO-spec Bilstein performance shock absorbers
- skid plates
- 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires

It also includes advanced off-road traction technologies, such as:
- standard electronic locking rear differential – which is available on both 4x4 and 4x2
- available Vehicle Dynamic Control
- Hill Start Assist
- and Hill Descent Control

Like all 2005 Frontier models, the NISMO Frontier is powered by a 265-horsepower 4.0-liter VQ V6. The all-new mid-size 2005 Frontier, by the way, will now be the most powerful mid-size truck available, with even more horsepower than some competitive V8s.

The NISMO Frontier, along with the other new Frontier models, goes on sale in late December.

Our other two new pieces of adventure equipment are the 2005 Pathfinder and Xterra. The Pathfinder went on sale on October 13th and the Xterra will be available in early 2005.

This 2005 Pathfinder comes with:
- 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6
- standard three-row, 7-passenger seating
- 5-speed automatic transmission
- Vehicle Dynamic Control
- and available All-Mode 4-wheel drive system

It also offers an array of advanced off-road traction assist systems.

This new Pathfinder is bigger, more powerful and has more advanced technology and features than the previous generation. It is also priced $2,350 less than the model it replaces – base MSRP to base MSRP.

The new 2005 Xterra continues the tradition of the original, offering everything you need, nothing you don’t. Only now this new Xterra has been sent to “Boot Camp.” Its proven off-road credentials have been greatly enhanced... new frame, advanced traction features, a more rugged look and feel, and more adventure utility with class-leading ground clearance and approach and departure angles.

Xterra has more interior room, a powerful 265-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 and offers features such as a multi-flex cargo area with Easy Clean Cargo Area surface and Utili-track system. It’s a tremendous package.

As you walk around the show, you can see how the aftermarket has embraced our new, expanded lineup of Nissan trucks and SUVs.

Our NISMO line of on-road and track components and accessories, which first went on sale in the U.S. in June 2003, is also growing at an incredible pace – both in sales and in expanded product offerings. In fact, we are debuting a NISMO Titan concept here at SEMA to gauge reaction and gather feedback.

I invite you to take a closer look at the products and vehicles on display here. And, as always, we like to hear your feedback.

On behalf of Nissan and NISMO, I want to thank you all for joining us today.

We have copies of a specially commissioned poster by artist Jay Koka for you, along with 35th Anniversary Z and SEMA Show press kits.

Thank you.

Nissan Announces Pricing for 2005 35th Anniversary 350Z [Nov 2, 04]

– 300 Horsepower 35th Anniversary Model Starts at $36,100 –

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Nov. 2, 2004) – Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today announced pricing for the special Nissan 350Z 35th Anniversary model, which makes its debut at the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. The commemorative model, which features a higher performance version of the Z®’s standard 3.5-liter V6, has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $36,100 for the 6-speed manual transmission-equipped model and $37,100 when equipped with the 5-speed automatic transmission.

The 35th Anniversary Z® is scheduled to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in January 2005.

“Thirty-five years ago, the original Datsun 240Z went on sale in North America with a MSRP of $3,526 – a tremendous value at the time,” said Mark McNabb, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. “This new 35th Anniversary 350Z model not only keeps the heart and soul of the original Z® firmly intact, but also its tremendous value equation.”

The 35th Anniversary Z® includes unique 18-inch cast aluminum-alloy wheels, front and rear spoilers, Brembo® brakes and special Z® badging. It is offered in just three colors – Ultra Yellow, Super Black and Silverstone. The 35th Anniversary Z® is also available with unique, optional black-and-tan leather-appointed seats (except with the Ultra Yellow exterior).

The 35th Anniversary Z®’s engine has been modified using revised pistons and camshaft and the addition of electronic exhaust valve timing control. The same engine will also be available as standard equipment on the 2005 350Z Track model (6MT only), which also goes on sale in early 2005.

“This new 35th Anniversary model represents the highest expression so far of the Z® and takes its place in a long line of extraordinary performance vehicles.” said McNabb.

The new 35th Anniversary model, like all 2005 350Z models, also receives a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), heated outside mirrors, wider view side mirrors and front seat lifter. Automatic transmission equipped models are now outfitted with downshift rev matching for smoother shifting, and manual transmission models now come with reduced clutch pedal effort for easier operation. The optional navigation system (available on 35th Anniversary and Touring models only) now has a faster system processor.

The 2005 350Z Coupe is available in six models – 350Z, Enthusiast, Performance, Touring, Track MT and the 35th Anniversary. The 2005 350Z Roadster is offered in Enthusiast, Touring and Grand Touring models. The Grand Touring, offered for the first time in 2005, includes standard Brembo brakes, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and 18-inch wheels and tires.

More information about the 2005 350Z and a special section of “35 Days of the Z®” is available at www.nissannews.com.
