Default K&N vs Cold air intake

I have read comparisons all over the web. Cobb tuning even had a full test of multiple brands (including their own).Cobbs result was no hp gains from any of the brands (including their own). They did not test a k&n drop in filter. My question is how much hp will a drop in k&n field on a dyno?

On an HR, very little if any. There are already plenty of threads about intakes in this section including one that talks about the benefits of K&N filters, but what it really comes down to is having a filter that you don't have to throw out (clean, oil reuse) and one that filters better with no loss in airflow.

he said very little if any. I think 4whp fits into the very little category. Especially when most of the time you wont get exactly the same numbers two runs in a row on a dyno anyway.

for $100 this the best bang for the buck on the HR. a true dual exhaust yields 12 whp for around $1000. this is 1/3 of the whp gained at 1/10 the cost.

ok yea...it still doesn't change the fact that it's a very small gain nobody said it wasn't worth the money just that you would see very small gains if you do see any.

okay here is a dyno for a 07 nismo Z and a 08 Z then my dyno, the same dyno, same day, back to back runs, same conditions

I made 266whp before the filters so based on the dynos of the stock HR Zs both manuals, making 254whp each and my car at the time only had an injen true dual exhuast and being an auto (more drivetrain loss) I would say that I made a over 12whp with true duals.

Lol.. on putting more power to the ground than stick shift HR's!

I made 4hp with Borla TD on stock car..

You shouldn't really compare other car's dynos and say your car made x power with x mod if you didn't have a base dyno yourself..

I didnt mean to hijack your thread but:
automatic cars generally have more drivetrain loss in terms of power...a manual typically has 17% drivetrain loss...I am just stating that most HR dyno on a dynojet at 250-260whp...I am just stating that the injen true dual exhaust made x whp on my car...thats all

I'm bringing this one back...

I have always had either a drop in K&N or a full CAI for my previous cars but with my Z I keep hearing how the HR engines get little to no HP increase from intakes. I think I would be happy with 3-4HP from a drop-in.

Although, I wonder what the dyno would say if it was simply stock vs. stock w/ drop-in K&N. I'm curious if it made that 4hp because of the true dual you already had installed?! I'm NOT a technical guy though so my thinking may not be entirely clear or intelligent.

cool man, what part of stl are you? i'm downtown.

from what ive read i think the injen CAI is probably the best bet. it doesn't lose anything vs. stock in the low rpms and gains some hp in the higher rpms.
the filters look like they are high enough to prevent hydrolock, but they do sell a water shield too.
i think its what i'm gonna get.. once i save up some cash. they are like 400$

I'm in the Arnold area. I plan on asking the fiancee for the drop-in K&N's as a b-day present. Even if it's a minimal gain (1-2hp) I'll still do it for the simple fact that I won't ever need to replace a filter again. What can I say, I trust K&N.
