Default upgrading sound system

okay.. so i decided to get a sound system that can pump out good bass, mids and highs... but i know i dont want the added weight of subs... so im thinking of just replacing the tweeters and mid range speakers and the head unit... does anybody know some good midrange speakers that can bang pretty good? also some tweeters? what are the specs on our speakers and tweeter? will i need an amp or anything? i am a total newb to how stereo's work in cars... and am thinking of doing this as a project. ive seen lots of examples on this site, so i think im going to follow those and come out with what i hope is for the best! gotta learn sometime... thanks for anybody's help

A good headunit and some decent low power handling speakers should give you a decent improvement in sound. Just makes ure the headunit RMS wattage equals or exceeds the power handling of the speakers...or at least gets close.
I can't reccomend any speakers or brands as I only know about the higher end products that would require you to get amps and add weight you don't want.

I share you concerns about weight, but a good sub makes a huge difference. I am going with a single JL 10W3v2. It is significantly lighter than the higher end W6 and W7 JL subs but still packs a good punch. My system is being powered by the 500/5 single JL amp, which again, saves weight over a multi-amp set-up. Good compomise between high-end sound and weight. I have also removed my stock spare tire assembly since it won't clear my Stoptech brakes anyway, so that gives me 30lbs to work with. My amp will be mounted in this space.

remove your spare and all the junk in the trunk and a sub won't make a difference :-)

If you want some bass with a small package, get an Infinity basslink, which is a 10" sub, powered and only weights around 20lbs total. Swapping out components and rear speakers will only add a few lbs if anything, due to the larger magnets.

Oh yeah forgot about the basslink, had one of these things in my old integra 4 years ago when they first came out. Amp and sub all in one and sounded very good.

majority of the people here in your situation go with an alpine hu, infinity kappa components and a basslink or under-the-strut enclosure. first 3 can be found at crutchfield.

6.5

if you buy components, which you should, they come with tweeters.

correct. while the basslink is cheap, it's cheap. depending on your expectations, it may or maynot meet it. for $200, don't expect to be throwing a block party.

will the 5 1/4 inch speakers work fine with our 6.5 inch holes? or will i have to make spacers or adaptors...?

is this what youre talking about with the infinity components?

bigger speakers = better bass response. get 6.5's. sounds like it's more what you're after. if you rreeeaaaalllly want to, you can put 5.25's, but i wouldn't recommend it. those infiniti's above will work, but i'd get these instead: Kappa 6.5's. Tweeters in the sail panels (or wherever you want really) and midrange in the door and you're good to go.

I've seen some people make adaptors out of wood (MDF). Alternatively, the stock speakers are molded onto a nice bracket. For mine, I dremmeled / cut out the stock speaker from its nice molded bracket and screwed mine in on top of it. A little urethane and it should seal up nicely.

As far as the 4 x 6.5's, the simple answer is yes. The complicated answer is that you should get 1 x Kappa component set for the front and 1 x coaxial set for the rear. No need to spend the cash on nice components for rear fill. Actually, there are those who would argue rear fill is not necessary (search for user 'Ahsmo'). Up to your personal preferences really. Could save some of that extra weight you were talking abou though. Good luck with the build!

6.5 speakers fit fine in the rears, but to install 6.5" components in the front, you will need 1" spacers so they dont make contact when the window is rolled down. The tweeter positioning is up to you, but since the stock tweeter is so small, you will have to cut up and fab the plastic piece if you want the stock location.

Call big-al at AudioMobile in Oakland. Buy nothing less than Focal 165k2p's component speaks.
