Pioneer CD Player in the rear small pocket

So it would have been (too) easy to just throw the Pioneer CDX-P680 ($150) into the large luggage cubby behind the passenger seat. The CD player is the remote for my Pioneer AVIC N2 ($1450) which I'll get started on next week.
I took a look at the front of the CD player and the size of the small (un-used) map pocket cubby holes and found the match. I didn't want the CD player to be visible so I thought that I would take a look at putting the player behind the door.
Physically there is plenty of room behind the player even recessed into the hole. I'll have to modify the pocket's steel hanger that sits behind the pocket to give it support. This will be easy and I'll get to it once I rip the rear end apart (again). I looked at putting the thing flush and exposed but that would be easy - cut a bit of plastic and I could match the missing pocket's cut out to the CD player's dimention.
So this morning I broke out the ever ready Dremel tool with a carbon steel cutting wheel and went at it. It did take a bit of fitting to get the top cut right so that the sliding door would work. As it slides it pushes out twice so it needs a bit of clearance.

Getting the mounting holes to line up took a bit of measurement but they came out nice. The pocket's front door is solidly mounted to the player gaining strength from it.

I haven't slid the thing into place but between my Dremel tool and tin snips there's nothing that can stand in my way! I'll pull the plastic piece that covers the rear speakers off and alter the large "U" bracket that held the old pocket in place. I'll slice out the center to form to "L" brackets one facing each way - toward the center. Once I get the angle's correct I'll test fit the player a couple of times before putting it back together. It's getting too hot in the garage and it's only 10:00 here.

I might mount a couple of blue LED's inside the door to give me some subtle lighting when I'm done. With this going in so nice I might make my amplifier installs stealth too replacing the Bose subwoofer hole with a driver's side luggage cubby hole to make room for a second amplifier.

that my friend...is a great damn idea! I might just do the old "monkey see monkey do" routine
Though it likes like its going to be a PITA to get the cartridges in and out, though it might just be the pics.

I can listen to the same six albums for a long time. I bought my car back in March and the same six CD's were in the stock Bose unit when I pulled it out. They were still in there when I re-installed it to eject the disks.
I've got an iPod with an FM transmitter for most music needs. I'll use the headend's MP3 abilities to drop a hundred of my most favorite songs onto a disk.

I got around to actually installing the thing. I had to notch the back of the speaker area to make room for the back of the CD to come thru just a bit. Good positive mounting is possible with the two tiny "L" brackets on either side of the CD player.

And the shot from the front - perfect fit.
