Default Does the OEM NAV play DVD?

Simple question...when Nissan says a DVD NAV system, does that mean the base NAV unit will also play DVD movies?

Default Nope...

Nissan's DVD-ROM system is not hackable, at least no one has been able to do it yet. It plays the DVD-ROM discs intended for navigation only. I believe the only way of getting movie capabilities into your Z will be to add a seperate DVD source (like a PS2), and add a rgb convertor plus fm modulator.

I am currently working on my system which will eventually include a PS2, Pioneer GEX-P7000tv, and an RGB interface. I am also working on some stereo upgrades to get rid of my crappy Bose system. It will sound good once I am done with it...

With those mods can you still use the NAV screen to view DVD's and hear it through all speakers?

Default Yes...

The Pioneer P7000 tv tuner is a nice piece of equipment. It allows you to switch between 3 seperate video sources (rear camera, PS2, nav, etc) via a small wireless remote. It handles the video source switching along with the audio routing via an FM modulator (12 selectable stations 87.9-xx.x). It also has built-in tv tuner capability, providing you add the 2 required tv antennas. Keep in mind that this device only provides a means of switching different video signal to your screen and stereo system. The actual video interfacing between the Pioneer P7000 and the nav screen is done via a seperate device.
Currently, I am working with the guys at video-nav.com on a possible solution for the Z to play DVD's using their PBA-N1 interface device. With the combination of these 2 devices, the Pioneer P7000 and the PBA-N1, any video source can be used with the factory nav screen. None of the NAV features will be disabled, and everything will work as Nissan intended. In fact, we should be capable of watching movies with the voice only portion of the nav activated, since the video source for the screen will now be switchable. I have spent alot of time working on this, and planning my stereo upgrades, and I hope everything goes as planned.
I will post my pictures and results as soon as I have everything completed. Since I am doing everything myself, it will probably be at least 2-3 weeks, as I am still waiting for speakers, amps, Dynamat, etc to arrive. I plan on doing everything at one time, to minimize the number of times my Z has to be disassembled.

Here are my planned stock NAV upgrades:
Playstation2 (DVD Video source)
Backup Camera
TV tuner

Stereo Upgrades (OUT WITH THE BOSE!):
Lots of Dynamat
Audio Control EQX-II (Xover and EQ)
Phoenix Gold ZX600ti (Sub amp)
Phoenix Gold Tantrum 400.4 (Front and Rear seperates amp)
MB Quart RCS216 Separates in front
Infinity 62.5i 2-way Coaxs in the rear
LPL44 (low pass level controller)
JL Audio 10W6 or 10W6v2 in stock sub location (after I seal that mammoth compartment)
Phoenix Gold wiring and 1F capacitor
I will be keeping the factory Bose HU for now
