Default For amps and speakers, what do I look for?

Hi all,

I am interested in what I should be looking for to replace the bose amp/speakers.

Id like to know the existing wattage of the speakers and then get some ideas from you gurus (including explanations) of what to get.

For example, Im okay with the power of the existing Bose system... so how do I choose an amp - how do I know which ones can drive a Sub directly?

What should I be looking for in the crossover piece?

Id obvioudly like to keep it low cost and basically "fix" my sound system - whats the best way to find the components I want - the local installer/retailers and a bunch of sharks... after all - they work on commission.

J

See my previous post:

For a basic system, go with a 4 channel amp that has built-in high and low level crossovers. Use the front channels for your front door speakers and use both rears to go to a single sub. Leave the rear speakers disconnected, you don't need them for good sound.

Can I use the head unit to power the rear speakers?

No, that would defeat the purpose. As I said, you don't need the rear speakers at all. They are pointless. Rear speakers are for surround sound and large family vehicles like minivans and suv's. The rear speakers in the Z only draw the soundstage to the rear which you don't want. Trust me, a good system in a 2-seater has no rear full-range speakers. Only subs are acceptable in the back.

I believe the 10W6 will fit in the stock locale. BUT, I don't recommend putting it there. I put mine in a custom box in the spare tire well. This is really the best location for a sub in the Z because you give up none of the valuable cargo space. A real sub in the stock location will beat you to death unless you go with a free-air solution. But, free-air subs will never have the tight bass of a sealed or even a ported sub box.
