what's the deepest i can go without the speakers sticking out?

the only speakers I know of that do not need a spacer is the phoenix gold elites or the exile components

hmmm 1 inch spacer...would that make the speakers stick out grossly or does it fit like a glove do you know?

No, the 1" spacers don't make the speaker "stick out". The door panel goes over it. Search for install pics. You'll see what I mean.
