Default damaging bass?

Hey, i was just wondering.. if you put in a really loud sound system into your car that has bass that shakes or rattles things in your car, would this damage any internal parts of the vehicle?

Possibly, I've heard of competitions where the windows blow out. Just imagine how much damage it is doing to your eardrums though.

Thumbs down

Having been around more than a few F-4 Phantoms, F-16 Hornets, and F-14 Tomcats in afterburner which produce volumes of sound far in excess of what even a couple of horsepower bass system can produce I would safely say no. I exposed delicate video and still cameras to the blast waves of these jet aircraft at full military throttle launching from an aircraft carrier and never had something as sensitive as a camera go bad. At volumes like this jet engines produce some people will experence nose bleeds and some camcorders will shake violently enough to lose head to tape contact.

Even to shatter the glass of the rear hatch you would need sound energy levels capable of driving you deaf in mear moments of exposure.

Practice safe sound and pretend that you only have two ears to live your life with.

Yeah, unless you're running something crazy like 8 woofers at 1000 watts a piece, I wouldn't worry about it. I think competition cars run around 150-160 db. At these decibel ratings, you need to be worrying about your internal organs more than your car.

Not true at all. I had a modestly loud system (15" Solo-Baric run by 1000W AudioBahn) and it definitely busted the glass that the rear view mirror was attached to. At first I had thought that the adhesive had just come loose but sure enough a chunk was taken out of the windshield and was stuck to the adhesive backing of the rear view mirror. Moral of the story is that I'm not deaf yet but probably will be eventually, "mere moments of exposure" no, but long term, yes.
