Laser jammers (shifters) are legal, since the FDA has not made them illegal.
I have been here for 9 years now, transferred here from Hawaii, my job, not my choice. But Fort Ord, Monterey, etc. is pretty nice, and decent weather too. I'm either at Fort Ord or Moffett to do the shopping. Much lower prices then out in town. I'll be going to Florida hopefully next year near Fort Walton Beach, Eglin AFB, etc. hopefully. That's the major anyway, checked it out this summer and was pretty good there also.
Nevermind I understand its a different type of gun that the police use but how many police/state troopers actually use laser instead of radar? (i guess it would depend on the town and state right?)

A lot of states and municipalities use old equipment because, basically, it still gets them plenty of tickets without spending any new money.
With radar, you have two types that interest me:
Instant on
On all the time
The instant on type does not emit any signal when it is not being actually used, thus, it cannot be detected until use. This is the "newer" type.
The on all the time type is what they use in my little town, basically, they turn it on at the start of the day, and it emits all day long. I detect these hick town guys if they even think about coming in the neighborhood. For example, shortly after I got my Z, I was coming home after night school at the same time several days in a row. Every night as I approached my driveway, the detector would sound off, but not loud, like when I get shot with radar, just registering a signal. I thought maybe there was a garage door opener or something causing it. My street to my house is uphill, just past the house there is the top of the hill, then it dips down again, for one block to a dead end. You cannot see over the rise when in the car. Well, a few days into it, I sat in the car after I shut down, and low and behold, a black impala unmarked slowly cruised over the rise with lights off. They had been sitting there, night after night, waiting for me to get on it or do something wrong. Of course I didn't, in a 25 mph neighborhood, but it shows that even though they were being stealthy, I still got the heads up. Since then I have trusted this device when it warns.
On I-65 coming from Louisville (heading south) the cops have a regular business, using mostly unmarked camaros and some pickup trucks, they are hammering tourists all the time passing thru. Well, and you can ask the guy carpooling with me, I have literally gotten a warning a mile before we saw them. I have had it detect a unmarked crown vic state trooper across 5 lanes of traffic in heavy traffic. So it works.
As for laser, if they shoot your car, you are done. Laser detectors are useless if they are shooting your car. When that thing goes off, they already have you. But the shifters confuse the signal, they get a bad reading, during the time they are trying to figure it out, you are supposed to slow down, then turn off the shifters, so that if they shoot you again, they get a good reading. Works.
Here is how I think of it. The cops are an bureaucracy. They spend the least they can. If they are getting plenty of stops with old radar, why spend thousands to get the one or two guys who are using tech? Don't think most of those guys in charge of the money (procurement) want to spend on high tech speeding equipment when you can just hit the highway with nothing but pacing and get stops all day long.
So for the most part, getting a good radar detector (Valentine, Escort) should be enough for most places. If you drive where laser is used, a shifter IMO is a good investment. And of course, use your eyeballs and those of your passenger. They work also. Some people I know who commute long distances use different tech. One guy has a police scanner. Another has a CB radio. My problem with this way is that it takes active participation, I don't want to be that involved. But I can see where it would work great, esp. the scanner. I have never used CB, but I am sure those truckers on the interstate pass around the "smokey" info.

Thank you again gringott for the info.
I have had passport x50 for almost a year now and it seems to do the job well (zero tickets) but I did have two instances were it did not detect a speed trap were i was clearly being targeted by the officer and if it was an instant on gun, i would have detected it when he shot me. (I guess they were using laser)
I guess Im paranoid but even with only two instances within a year, i still want a lasser jammer. Would I be crazy for spending the money?

Are Laser Jammers Legal?
The following states are known to have legislation prohibiting the use of laser jammers:
California
Colorado
Illinois (as of 1/1/2006)
Minnesota
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Utah
Virginia
Washington DC
This list is not guaranteed to be complete. Before purchasing or using a laser jammer, be sure to check you local laws.

The ZR3 had no problem jamming the Kustom Prolaser III and Laser Atlanta Type S laser guns. It failed to effectively jam the Stalker LZ-1 and LTI Ultralyte LR laser guns. The Laser Atlanta Type S laser gun that it jammed successfully was used in "Stealth Mode" and the Escort ZR3 laser shifter did not detect the laser gun or jam it. The ZR3 is about 50% effective according to their testing but it all depends on which laser gun is used in your state.

Good post Radar King.
I think it is important to mention that there are some very clever cops that utilize different traps in order to catch speeders.
Dispite having good protection with my Escort SRX, I have discovered that clever cops will sit and target traffic at the end of a long sweeping bend in the road. If there are no bounced beams to alert your detector, you will not get a warning until it is too late.
Also, it pays to be careful as you reach the top of a hill, for the same reason.
If I am in a hurry, my favorite thing to do is follow someone who is (apparently) also.

I think the point that is being missed is that:
The FCC (a federal agency) has made radar jammers illegal.
The FDA ( a federal agency) has not made laser jammers illegal.
Of course, states and cities, etc can have laws of their own.
For example, radar detectors are not illegal in Kentucky, however, it is illegal to operate a radar detector on Fort Knox, a Federal facility.
I did not mean to give the impression that it was impossible to have a law against laser jammers.
Same as detectors, aren't they illegal in Virginia, for example?

if no one has purchased it yet, ill let you know by the end of the month. I already have a XRS-9500 radar detector. Im sure they're not compatible, but do I need to have a passport RD to have it run properly?
