Radar detector mount

I looked around and decided to buy this mount for my Escort 8500 X50. I have called 3 times and sent an email several days ago. Has anyone bought one of these lately? Are the people very responsive?

Scarab440 12-11-2006 09:46 PM

Defiantly get that one, I had purchased mikes and the countryjoy mounts, and I went with the countryjoy. The whole thing is metal and also the z emblem. Mikes defiantly was good but I didnt like how it was made with plastic and the z emblem was just a sticker.

My review of the countryjoy radar mount from countryjoycrafts.com --

I took a leap of faith and ordered one. It arrived 3 days later via USPS. I went to install the mount and after tightening the screws all the way down it was still loose. After messing with it for another 20 minutes I decided I was probably sent the wrong one (I specified 2006 350Z). Their FAQ:

7. If your mount is too loose, you got the wrong size! Don't blame the mount, you measured incorrectly!
I didn't order the wrong thing because my reciept even stated 2006 350z! I ended up shimming the thing up with black tape so now it isn't that loose.

Bottom line:
a) craftmanship was excellent
b) customer service is non-existent
-- they don't answer or return calls despite what is posted on their site. I tried 4 times during business hours THEY posted and never a return call.
-- e-mails go unreplied, sent 3 e-mails with no reply.

Their website is laced with little customer digs like that. Its a little strange for a site trying to sell something. altough the mount does look nice.

The instructions have digs like that too. That doesn't bother me as much as the customer no-service. Although the mount is top-notch it stinks paying $40+ for something that doesn't fit as advertised.

bverschage 12-24-2006 08:29 AM

I need to get one of these

Robert_K 12-24-2006 08:31 AM

Sorry. Should've ordered the Mikes Mount. Although I don't know it his works w/ an '06 mirror. Didn't know there were different sizes on the mirrors mounts.

Ianmtx 12-24-2006 08:42 AM

To the OP, nothing against Mike, his mount is basically a piece of crap. The difference between the two is Mike's "Z" emblem on the front is a little sticker on it and the whole thing is made out of cheap plastic. The website you posted the link to has a mount that is not made of cheap plastic, it's made of machined aluminum. My roomate bought the one from Mike, and I spent a little more money and got the one that you posted the link to. Needless to say, once I put mine on, he threw his away and bought the one I had. I'm sure Mike's a good guy, but when you skimp on money, you get what you pay for.

Also, with Mike's mount, my roomate wasn't able to get it snug up underneath the rearview mirror and it would freaking vibrate like hell when he was on any kind of bumpy road. The higher quality one however is very tight underneath the rearview mirror and does not rattle at all.

Robert_K 12-24-2006 09:06 AM

I have no problems with my Mike's mount.

Ianmtx,
Let me clear up a few things, Mike's mount is made of acetal (Delrin) which costs 2 times as much as aluminum. All the hardware is stainless steel. It is machined on a CNC mill. The selling point is not the "Z" sticker but a small profile mount the fits under the mirror. The mount clamps tightly to the mirror shaft and if the detector rattles it is the fit of the suction cup bracket in the detector. As far as the cost, I am a "Z" owner that made a part for my "Z" that I thought other "Z" owners would like. I sell the mounts as a hobby not a busness. I have sold over 400 mounts only to members of the Z and G35 forums. No one has ever complained about the workmanship!!! I take it personal the you call it a piece of crap. Do a search and read coments of other members.
Mike the maker of Mike's mount

from what i've seen mikes mounts kick some serious ass. Plus wouldnt you rather support a fellow 350z enthusiast than some random company. It also just so happens that mikes mount it much better, and i plan to be purchasing one soon. Big thumbs up to mike for an awesome product, keep it up.

gringott 12-26-2006 04:34 AM

I have mike's mount, used it until I went built in detector. Worked flawlessly, I did not put the Z sticker on, so it was very low-key. It does what it is supposed to do, hold the detector.

Got my mount from Mike!

Mike ships faster then my radar detector's manufacture (Cobra). I got the rest of my parts (extra power cord) today and installed it all in about 10 min. :)
Hardwired to the mirror power and no sloppy wires hanging around.

Looks good! Thanks Mike.

wahooj 03-07-2007 04:19 PM

I made a shameless copy of Mike's mount for my Z out of a piece of wood, and some spare parts for mounting a toilet. I spray painted it black. My friend bought a G and I told him to buy Mike's mount though.

Ty,
Your welcome. Glad you like the mount!! Word has got out about my mount at other car forums and I am selling mounts for all kinds of cars and trucks.

Shame on you!!! (Just kidding)
Mike

The next time I get motivated I'll buy one of Mike's for my Z and put the mount I made in my Outback.

Owner of Z mount

Wow Powered by Z, you are way off base here.

First of all I am the owner of the zee mount. This mount is made specifically for the 350z and has branched out to other cars due to its popularity.

I DO return phone calls. If you had left a message on the answering machine, your call would have been returned. I received NO calls about a size problem. You obviously didnt. OR if you called in Dec, we were on vacation for 10 days and couldnt get back to you in a timely fashion. Also ALL emails are answered. There is NOT one bit of truth in what you are saying. SHAME on you. When we got home every call that was on my machine got answered. I had lots of hang ups but that does not constitue not anwering back, if no message was left.

Why your 2006 didnt fit is beyond me unless you have a 2003-2005 mirror on your Z by mistake. Or you have an early 2006 that still was using the older mirrors. We have not had ONE problem with fitting the correct mount to the correct year. Or perhaps you do not have the homelink mirror. I dont know what your problem was. YOU should have called and asked to replace it with a 3/4 mount instead of the 23mm. Your accusations about customer service are totally unfounded. I never received a call or email about a size problem from you.

Our mount is custom crafted aluminum. Yes it cost more because Delrin does not have the tensil strength nor the ultimate shear strength of aluminum. It is a good plastic. And sorry Mike, no offense, but aluminium does cost more. Ours is made on a CNC machining center, it is black onidized and the 3 dimensional Z is buffed back out for a shine. The whole thing is cut out of a billet of aluminum. It will last forever. As said on the site, it is not for everyone. As with any product there are price points for everyones pocket book.

My FAQs are not digs but meant to be funny Scarab440.

I have tried too many times to get you boys to measure your stems, because not all mirrors are the same. AND SIZE DOES MATTER. :D After the billionist time, it gets to be old hat. So if you didnt measure your mirror stem, what can I say? I cant guess what it is. My testimonials far out weigh what you are harping about. Perhaps my sense of humor just doesnt mesh with yours.

Some people like Mikes, some like ours. Its a choice, but to sit here and bash either one of us, is totally uncalled for.

Anyone with experience with either of these mounts in an Acura TL? Will they fit?

Love mine from Country Joy, installed no problem and I get guys asking me all the time "where did you get that, that's cool."

tquill 08-16-2007 11:25 AM

Wow zeechicks rant seemed a bit excessive. Anyway, I have Mike's mount and it's awesome. Detector is steady as a rock and it sits perfectly about an inch below the review mirror.

xoleras 07-08-2008 12:08 AM

I bought mine from Country Joy as well.
This thing came to my house within 2 days ( I live in AZ its pretty close).
I had it installed on my expedition in less than 2 mins.
I havent seen mike's yet, just a few pics, but I am sure his is pretty good as well.
I am ordering one for my V1 now, I am selling both my Escort 9500is (and the mount as well)
