I was wondering if anyone had spent the time replacing the existing speaker wiring with better wiring to the doors??

(Firewall thingie)

Its not hard if you are careful. As long as you don't nick any of the wires going through the connector, it is fairly easy. I used a rotary cutting blade (like a rotozip) on my dremel. Just drilled in and cleared it out.

Just take your time and follow the DIY posted in the How-To stickie. Took me about 40 min per door, being very meticulous.

 

i have done between G35 and 350zs, probably about 20-25 cars running door wiring, with Zs being a little easier than Gs due to the large gap in the door to reach into.

the first one took me 2 hours to do from start to finish lol now i can do them in about 15 mins for both doors...

but the key part above all, is being careful when drilling the molex plug and be patient when you are putting it back together...adhere to these two and you will be fine

I got er done!!! without costly mistakes. i set up aftermarket speakers and better speaker wiring plus a lead for LED lights on my 4 speakers when the headunit is turned on. RICE!

 

+1 for the dremel rotary tool and clear it out the harness/connector ever so carefully.

Does running different speaker wire even matter? Isn't a wire a wire (in other words, insignificant to sound quality).

 

my reasons:

one: a wire is w wire but what guage, the stock wiring is puny, not to mention if you have a bose amp, it runs all over the car. puny wire over long distance makes it extremely inefficient, so if you are sending a decent amount of power to it, you are loosing power, and worse the wire is heating up, if you are really pounding it, there is even a slight chance of the wire overloading and catching on fire.

two: in some cars, when going through the stock speaker wires, there is a chance of noise getting into the system. its not usually hte case wtih the Z, but it has happened with certain cars.

at the end fo the day, its simply the right thing to do when you are adding an amp to the system. From a sound quality, integrity and safety stand point, i make it a practice to do it on everycar.

its similar to me looming hte powercable inside the hood, or using high strand power and ground cables...in most cases, perhaps you dont need to do it, and the car can run for years with out any issues, but in the back of my mind, i know that if i do it this way, the chances fo any failure or problems is decreased even more

 

disconnect the battery when doing any electrical work, it saves fuses and even screwing up anything.

dremmel empty area of the firewall white plastic that leads the wires into the car. you need to remove those interior kick panel things by first unsnapping the base trim on the door and remove the rubber (not all the way).


on the firewall connection, there is a snap to remove the outer black plastic and then pull back the rubber insolator to expose the white plastic connections which you will be dremmeling thru VERY CAREFULLY.

also if anyone knows, is there any warranty implications when you do this?
i purposely did not extend any of my door wiring for the lambo door kit
because i figured it would void out warranty.

id say i spend about 10 mins or less doing the dremmel for each door. i found the door does ground to chassis for any led or any +12vdc mods. (I was in there and also removed the orange cup holder led(06 model) and replaced them with blue ones.
i was not going to run the door tweets so leave the connector that snaps into the door panel disconnected. i just tied it once to lessen slack and move it out of the way from any obstruction.


any questions, ive removed the door firewall a few times now.
oh yea, when you put back the door firewall plastic connector thing. you want to make sure you run the wires exactly like they were, i forget if it mattered cuz i run Vertical doors and it matters. you have to open the f

 

I just did it this weekend. Driver took a while (i almost gave up), but passenger was a breeze.

If I were to do this again, it would take me less than 1 hour LOL!!!.

I got it done using the DIY on this site.

Here is one trick:
When you unbuckel the wiring harness in the door jam and try to pull it apart, don't open the door all the way. Start to pull the harness apart and pull the door in just slightly. Believe it or not, this will give you the room the separate the two sides of the harness.

Neat trick, but it works.

 

not so, for my DJ biz for example, I gladly dish out $100 for a good speaker cable.

 

Let's just say.. i had my BCM replaced because of the white connector (called an SMJ) that ties the door to the body... so yeah.. disconnect the battery..

 

How much it cost to replace the bcm?

Also, you guys should be sealing up the hole you make. Otherwise, water will have a direct path from the door to the BCM. There have been several people who have had their BCMs replaced from water damaged after they drilled holes in the waterproof connectors.

Even if you don't drill or change your wires, doesn't water still contact the wires if you take that assumation?
