with SQ, it all comes down to personal preference to be honest. I for one, have NEVER liked an infinity spekaer system, beyound the reference line coaxials whcih i think is not a bad set for stock replacment run off headunit power. the kappa and perfect, aside from being decent midbass producers, leaves a lot to be desired.

so if your choices comes down to the JL XR set, and the infinity, it would be a no brainer, the JL for sure!

but again, i emphasize this is my opinion, not fact, based on what i like in music and what not...

what kind of sound are you looking for?

My inifity reference speakers have been pretty good to me being on a buget.

rock/hard rock to me warrants something with good midbass, smooth and warm midrange and highs...midbass to account for the drum notes, and warm highs and mids so the thrilling guitar riffs dont kill ya hehe

also, to me, the mounting on a Z really makes a huge difference, well semi-sealed door pods and kicks really make a HUGE difference...

are you open to any other brands? oh and what are you powering everything with?

Im open for options. Im powering with a Alpine MRV-F345 4-ch. and my Type-X is powered by a MRD-M1005

What my idea that i was going to mount was on the door. The 6.5 low were the current speakers are, then above that place the 4" & tweeter. Then were the stock tweeter location was going infill the hole has finish smooth. I may mount my inifity tweeter in the a-pillar facing the windsheld like i saw on CDT web page. What do you think?

I know you like to have the kick panels, But i use the foot rest alot when driving.

hehe i for one amp not a fan of a pillar mounting of the tweet...

one to me is makes the highs more harsh, adn second, it creates a separation of sound...

if you are going to go high, mount hte midrange and the tweeterup there...

in the Z, since you dont want to loose the foot rest (though everyone gets used to them in a few days), do this:

do a door pod housing the midbass, heavily dampen the door and the plastic door panel, if you can semi-seal it hat would be great.

midrange and tweeter in the kicks, or if you are going with a two way, tweeter in the kicks.

Or would spending a little more, for Focals be better?

the focal obviously is a good speaker...but buying someting in taht range, especially speakers, i prefer to get with warranty...ucase with one blown midbass, the money you saved could be lost soon...

i think the DLS UP6 or the UR6 would be right up your alley, the UR is similar performing as the 165, but slightly warmer upper freq...just send me a PM and maybe we can work something out hhehe

JL Audio by far, I use to have 2 10 w6v2's with a jl 1000/1 amp and their quality and sound was excellent. Although you are looking for component speakers, I would still recomend the JL's

I have the JL set you are considering. My impressions- even after turning down the gain on the tweets, they were kind of loud compared to the rest of the system. I installed an EQ and got it all balanced. I have the mids and tweets in kick panels, and I kind of enclosed the area in the door behind the woofers to get the recommended enclosure size. EQ'd, the woofers make great mid and deep bass. I even ran the system without a sub for a while and it wasn't lacking much. I had some Infiniys a while back, and the cones cracked within a couple years. I like the Kappa Perfect sub though (in my other vehicle).

Ok heres a photoshoped of the layout. I used someone elses Z-door that had the focals, this is just for placement ideas. Ill have a second pair of tweeters in the a-piller firing toward the windsheild too. Like on this web site http://www.cdtaudio.com/speaker_placement.htm

put the tweeters and mids in the kicks on an angle unless you have some time alignment capability.

Its funny ... you went from a $150 set of speakers in the beginnning to a $500 set of speakers now ... when did the budget triple?

Hi, Yes i do have time alignment capability with my alpine PXA-H701 Multichannel audio processor. My problem with kicks is i use my foot rest alot, plus id ended up kicking it and damaging them.

Well those $150 speaker i have, i had for many years. So its time to upgrade them soon to something nicer.

If you want something different .. go active .. you have more than enough processing power (I run an H701 as well).

Seas midbass and Millenium excel tweeters will destroy anything you can buy for $500. If you are going to be enclosing them in a sealed door cavity, this is by far a better way to go.
