Default JL10w6v2 doesn't sound good...help please.

Hi all, I have a JL10w6v2 in a zenclosure type r box running off a jl 500/1 amp and a clarion deck. Now my problem is that the bass just sounds loud and I can't feel the bass like i want it. when i turn the bass up enough to feel it it hurts my ears and the pulsing sound drowns out a lot of my music. everything is hooked up properly and i think it's just how it is.

Now i've come with an ideas why this may be the case please correct me if i'm wrong or give me advice please.

it's because it's a hatchback. the subs in my previous cars were in the trunks so only the bass itself would reach me in the driver seat. however because the Z is a hatch the pulsing of the air around the sub reaches me directly.

I would really like some deep bass and wonder if going to a 12" would give me the bass i want. unfortunately i doubt my box would allow a JL12w6v2 to fit, but how would a JL12w3v2 sound incomparison to my current sub?

Any opinions appreciated thank you

I know this may be a big hassle, but could those of you with 1 jl10w6v2 with 500/1 amp setups (i know there's quite a few) please post the settings of your amp. I know it depends on the deck settings and type of music but I really can't set my amp to make it sound good so if you like your sub sound please post settings. I've posted pics of my amp with the different settings available for adjustment.

Kind of sounds like it's out pf Phase. Check wiring an X-over Freq.
Just a FYI Sub freq's are omni directional.

trust me, it's not because of the hatch. It should be even louder and deeper than your trunk. You have to mess with the settings on the amp. Don''t turn the gain up too much. Also , after you set your amp, mess with your head unit. Make sure you don't set the music up too much higher than the sub.

+1, it should not be any higher than 100Hz. This would be the max I recommend for a 10" sub. You could probably even set this around 80Hz if your front stage can produce enough to keep up with the sub down that low.

Once this thing is set up and tuned right, you should have zero complaints about the bass. You have a great box, a good sub and a good amp.

+1 on the X-over being set lower than 100 cycles. You need to add about a quarter pound of Polyfill (Walmart) to each chamber. It works by slowing down the sound waves from reaching the inside walls of the box so quickly. It will be much less "boomy" and result in tighter, deeper bass that you feel in your chest and *** rather than your eardrums.

By making the sound waves take longer to reach their destination, it also tricks the subs into thinking they are in a larger box. The Zenclosures boxes are nice, but they are not made large enough for every sub to perform correctly.

I had a 10" sub in a smallish box. As 350zspl said, it was not deep. Punchy for sure, but I wanted to feel it rumble. An IDMAX10 might work if you wanted to stick with a 10" sub. An IDMAX12 would be even better.

This definitely depends on the sub of course.....but if you are trying to compare "deep" of a 12", then a 10" will not be as deep as a 12". Very few 10's can reach down as low as a 12 can without dB loss.

To me, my Diamond 10" sounds pretty deep in the .8 cu ft I have it in with no polyfil. But a 12" would definitely be deeper.

In regard to my previous post, how would a jl12w3v2 compare the the higher model jl10w6v2? would it give me the deeper bass?

If you want bass that you feel, you have to go with a bigger sub. 10's will never get as deep as a 12 or 15. If you listen to rock alot, you want an 8 or 10 so that its punchy and can keep up with the music. If you listen to rap/hip hop, you want a 12 or 15 so you can get super low and deep. I run a single 12L7 in my car right now and it gets pretty deep where it knocks my rearview off. I really want to go to the Zenclosure that holds 2 12's or see if Mike can make one that holds 2 15's

are you referring to the center section that says "advanced bass control"? cause if you are then yes those were always off only because when i turned them on and played around with the settings, i could not hear any audible difference. Or if i did hear a difference it didn't sound better... should i take it to a car audio shop and would they tune all my amps and such for a nominal fee?

Turn on your infrasonic filter swith, And set the switch to 20-25 Hz.
This will eliminate the 20Hz and lower signals that a human ear can not hear to be isolated from th eap, so the amp does not work So hard to produce soemthing you can not hear... Also makes your sub work a lot more efficiently.

Set your gain at about Half as a start point,
(It looks like in th epictures it is all the way up)

Set Your crossover setting to 60HZ

Make sure crossover is at 24db

When you bought the sub did they ask you waht type of music you listen to, and what is your expectations out of your sub and amp.

It just sounds like you want a lot of deep bass, which you will get from a 10w6 but it will need to be in a ported enclosure.

You would be better off with a 10w7, you have enough power to run a 10w7.

Or keep the 10w6 and get2 more. Get a triple 10" Box. You will not believe the sound coming out of the 3x10" w6 enclosure... Youwill ofcourse need a nother amp. like the 1000/1.

feel free to call me.

Looking at your pics, you have your Amp Low Pass Filter set at 12dB at 40Hz......that would be the problem I'm thinking. Turn that up to around 80Hz and let me know if it makes a difference.

Also what is the output voltage of your clarion headunit? Depending on the output voltage you might have to switch your 'input voltage' from low to high.

***EDIT***
To clarify the low/high input selection
Low is for input voltage of 200mV-2V
High is for input voltage of 800mV-8V RMS

To clarify some of the above...sound is sound. Whether or not a 10" sub can play lower- louder- than a 12" or 15" sub comes down to the design of the sub and/ or box. It is incorrect to make the statement that a 10" sub can not play lower-louder than a 12" or 15" sub.

This is akin to making the statement that a larger sub can not be as quick as a smaller sub.

Calling Jim Rhit.... please come to a white paging telephone.....

It looks like your low-pass filter is set at 40Hz. That's pretty low. I would try a few higher settings. Then try a few different bass boost settings.

Hey everyone thx for all your help, I adjusted the settings and added about a half pound of polyfill and it sounds AWESOME.
hehe I must also note that the polyfill was key and for those who want their bass a little deeper, polyfill is the way to go thank you everyone.
